Toronto FC have acquired an international roster slot after trading defender Pat Phelan to the New England Revolution.

"We have a very deep squad this year and it's been tough for him to get playing time," said manager Mo Johnston. "Now, he gets to go home, and hopefully get some playing time there. He's been tremendous here, done everything that we've asked of him. This deal is suitable for both parties involved in getting what they want."

Phelan, 23, was selected in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft by Toronto FC in the 1st round, 10th overall. The Wake Forest product did not see any first team action with the team, but started in three of four games in the Reserve Division.

As a result of the trade, Toronto FC forward Jarrod Smith makes the move up to the senior roster. The New Zealand Native recorded his first MLS goal on April 13th against the LA Galaxy. He has logged 247 minutes with the first team, starting two of eight matches. Smith has also started four games in the Reserve Division and scored against Kansas City's Reserves.
