Toronto FC opened up the Nutrilite Canadian Championship with a 1-0 win against Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo on Tuesday night.

Reds defender Marco Velez scored the only goal of the game, his second of the season. Just as he did in the MLS against New York Red Bulls earlier this month, Velez rose high to head home a cross from Laurent Robert. The goal came in the 72nd minute.

Montreal played for much of the second half with ten men after defender Stefano Pesoli was sent off for a second yellow card.

Reds striker Danny Dichio has been struggling with a groin strain in recent weeks and was forced to leave the game before half time. He was replaced by Jarrod Smith. With Tyrone Marshall out injured, Olivier Tebily made his first TFC start alongside Marco Velez in the center of defense. Kevin Harmse and Jeff Cunningham came into the side for Mo Edu and Amado Guevara who are away on international duty.

Toronto FC now prepare to face L.A. Galaxy in MLS on Saturday, kick off 3:30 p.m. at BMO Field.

The Reds return to Nutrilite Canadian Championship action on July 1st against Vancouver Whitecaps at BMO Field. The Impact are in Toronto on July 22nd. Tickets for the games against the Whitecaps and Impact go on public sale at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28th.

Toronto FC side: Greg Sutton, Marvell Wynne, Olivier Tebily, Marco Velez, Jim Brennan, Rohan Ricketts, Kevin Harmse, Carl Robinson, Laurent Robert, Jeff Cunningham, Danny Dichio (Jarrod Smith 41).
