Match Summary:

The Toronto Lynx staged a stunning upset this evening, gunning down the powerful Michigan Bucks 1-0 in Pontiac, Michigan and harvesting the 3 points for the victory. The loss is the first of the season for Michigan, and only their second home loss in two seasons, both at the hands of the Lynx. The victory elevates the Lynx to a shiny 5-2-2 (17 points) record and vaults the Lynx back over the Cleveland Internationals into second place in the Great Lakes Division. Michigan falls to 8-1-0 on the year, but remains atop the division and in first place in the Central Conference with 24 points.

Michigan opened strong on their home turf, but the Lynx were able to withstand the pressure, aided by a number of athletic saves by Nils Binstock in the Toronto goal. The Lynx’ patience was rewarded in the 26th minute when Daniel Revivo dribbled into the Bucks penalty area, and was brought down by goalkeeper Bret Mollon for a penalty kick. Chris DeAbreu calmly struck the ball home from the spot to give the Lynx a 1-nil advantage. The teams traded chances throughout the remainder of the half, but the defenses dominated and Toronto went to the locker room up by one.

Michigan amped up their attack as the second half unfolded, with Kenny Uzoigwe creating a number of dangerous chances, but the star forward and his Bucks brethren could not beat crack the Lynx’ tenacious defence and Binstock in the Lynx net. The club, missing standout defender Erik DiLorenzo due to suspension, managed to repel the Bucks’ offensive charge and the final whistle blew with the Lynx ahead for the huge road win.

Toronto continues on to Fort Wayne, Indiana for a Saturday evening encounter with the Fever, and head to Grand Rapids, Michigan next Thursday to meet the Edge. The Lynx will then return home on Tuesday July 1 to battle the Cleveland Internationals in the “Steeltown Showdown” at Brian Timmis Stadium in Hamilton at 4:00 PM. The game will be preceded by a pair of Hamilton Spectator Cup all-star games (boys and girls).
