Match Summary:
Five first half goals helped the Toronto Lady Lynx retake first place in the Northern Division this afternoon with a thorough domination of the Rochester Rhinos 8-0 at Oshawa Civic Stadium. Stefania Morra and Brittany Bisnott both recorded hat tricks in the game to pace the way for Toronto. The victory raises the Lady Lynx’ record to 8-1-1 (25 points), and vaults the team back past Ottawa to the top of the division. Rochester, who had only conceded 11 goals on the season coming into the match, falls to 4-3-1 (13 points) on the season, and remains mired in fifth place.
Toronto started quickly and controlled the match from the opening whistle in front of a boisterous crowd in Oshawa. Morra opened the scoring in the 17th minute with her fourth of the year, quickly followed one minute later by Bisnott with her fifth, and Toronto was off to the races with a 2-0 lead. Morra added goals in the 22nd and the 42nd minutes to earn her hat-trick while Bisnott tallied in 39th minute to give the Lady Lynx a stunning 5-0 lead at half-time.
After the break, Toronto remained in complete control of the match, and Rochester, with a short bench, was unable to muster much of an attack in the hot conditions. Bisnott completed her hat trick in the 66th minute on a Brooke McCalla feed, before McCalla herself recorded her first of the year in her season debut fourteen minutes later. Nicole Markowitz rounded out the scoring in the 87th minute when she slammed home her second goal of her rookie season, giving Toronto an 8-0 lead. McCalla recorded the assist on Markowitz’s goal, giving her four points on the afternoon. Elise Kuhar-Pitters recorded the clean sheet in goal for Toronto, her second of 2008.
The Lady Lynx victory capped off a busy Celebrating Durham Women in Soccer Day in Oshawa, which saw the Durham East and Durham West All-Stars battle to an entertaining two-all draw prior to the W-League match amongst other soccer activities. Proceeds from the annual event, which began last season in Pickering with an exhibition match between the Lady Lynx and the Pickering Soccer Club U21 Ladies, will go towards the YWCA Durham Women’s Centre.
Toronto returns to action on Wednesday afternoon, July 9, as they host the Laval Comets at Centennial Park Stadium at 11:00 AM for the team’s annual Summer Sizzler Youth Day. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Lynx ticket hotline at 416-251-4625 x 31, or at the stadium box office one hour prior to kick-off.
