Lady Lynx Fall to Fury
First loss of the season for Toronto

Date: June 22, 2008

Venue: Varsity Centre, Toronto, ON

Final Score: Toronto 2 (1) Ottawa 3 (1)

Match Summary:

The Toronto Lady Lynx dropped their first match of the year this afternoon, a 3-2 defeat at the hands of their bitter Ontario rivals, the Ottawa Fury. The Fury avenged their first-ever loss to the Lady Lynx last Sunday in Ottawa with the victory, and raised their record to 6-1-0 (18 points) on the season, while Toronto drops to 7-1-1 (22 points). The Lady Lynx retain first place in the Northern Division however, four points ahead of Laval and seven ahead of Ottawa. Oni Bernard and Tessa Dimitrakopoulos scored for the Lady Lynx, while Elise Kuhar-Pitters suffered her first career defeat in goal.

The game kicked off in a driving rainstorm, with severe weather looming on the horizon. Ottawa opened strong in the wet conditions, and went ahead in the 14th minute when Jennifer Hance headed home a Courtney Wetzel free kick to make the score 1-0. Six minutes later, the weather worsened and a twenty-minute delay ensued.

The Lady Lynx regrouped following the storm break, and tied the game in the 37th minute on Bernard’s second goal of the year. The young midfielder, who came into the game following the delay, took a Stefania Morra feed and banged it past Erin Reinke in the Ottawa goal to level the match and send the teams into the intermission tied at one-all.

Ottawa regained control of the match as the second half opened, and two quick Jodie Taylor goals put the visitors up 3-1 by midway through the period. The Lady Lynx refused to go quietly, however, and clawed their way forward with a number of attacks on goal as the game wound towards time. Dimitrakopoulos pulled the hosts to within one with a powerful free kick in the 90th minute, slamming the ball through the Fury wall and into the netting, but the Lady Lynx could not tally again and the game ended 3-2 in Ottawa’s favour.

Toronto now has a much-deserved two week break in the schedule, with their next action scheduled for July 5 at Oshawa Civic Stadium at 4:00 PM versus the Rochester Rhinos. The Lady Lynx will be taking part in Celebrating Durham Women in Soccer Day that afternoon in conjunction with the Durham Region Soccer Association with proceeds of the event benefiting the YWCA Durham Women’s Shelter. The W-League match will be preceded by a Durham East/West All-Star game at 1:00 PM. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Lynx ticket hotline at 416-251-4625 x 31, or through the Durham Region Soccer Association and its various clubs. Tickets will also be available at the Oshawa Civic Stadium box office starting at 12:00 PM on game day.
