Match Summary:

The Toronto Lady Lynx and the Hamilton Lady Avalanche battled to a tense 1-1 draw this evening at Brian Timmis Stadium in Hamilton. The tie extends the Lady Lynx (5-0-1, 16 points) unbeaten streak to six to open the season, while Hamilton (2-0-1, 7 points) remains unbeaten in three to start the year. Brittany Bisnott scored for the Lady Lynx in the draw, who remain alone atop the Northern Division. The tie was the first point ever earned by Hamilton against Toronto, with the Lady Lynx holding a 4-0-1 edge all-time against their local rivals.

The match was a typical Toronto-Hamilton encounter, with tight marking, hard tackles and physical play throughout. Neither team was able to establish a rhythm through the first half, with both teams unable to create many scoring chances in the muggy conditions. Toronto's best chance to score in the opening frame came midway through the period when Stefania Morra took a pass immediately in front of the Hamilton keeper, but her shot sailed inches over the crossbar and the game remained scoreless.

The second half continued in much the same manner, with neither team able to take control of the match. Hamilton appeared to take the lead in the 73rd minute when former Lady Lynx player Heather MacDougall was sent in alone and put the ball into the net, but the play was ruled offside and the goal nullified. A few minutes later, Kelly Heaton sent a shot from the near corner barely over the crossbar, another close call for the hosts.

The scare seemed to energize the Lady Lynx, and they finally broke the game open just a minute later. Julia Bazi found former Lady Avalanche striker Bisnott alone in the six-yard box. The Brampton native took the ball, evaded a tackle and slammed the ball home from close range to put the Lady Lynx up 1-nil in the 81st minute.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Hamilton tied the match just six minutes later. Hamilton was awarded a free kick just inside half, and Chelsea Spencer's ensuing shot was met by the head of Lady Lynx defender Kelsi Landry, and accidentally deflected over a leaping Kate Pace into the net for an own goal to equalize the game. The game ended shortly after, and the points were split by the two rivals.

Toronto remains on the road for two more matches, with stops in Ottawa on Sunday and Laval next Wednesday, before returning home on June 22 against their bitter rivals the Ottawa Fury at 4:00 PM at Varsity Centre. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Lynx ticket hotline at 416-251-4625 x 31, or at the Varsity Centre box office one hour prior to kickoff.
