Match Summary

The Toronto Lady Lynx kicked off their fourth W-League campaign in style this afternoon with a solid 2-0 defeat of the Western Mass Lady Pioneers in Ludlow, Massachusetts. The Lady Lynx are undefeated all-time (4-0-0) in season openers, with today’s match in Western Mass marking the first time the club has opened their season on the road. Alica Donaldson and Tessa Dimitrakopoulos scored for the Lady Lynx, while Aurelea Gumiela earned the shutout in her W-League debut.

Toronto opened strong, and their hard work was rewarded in the 22nd minute when Donaldson notched the Lady Lynx’ first goal of the young season. Veteran defender Vonya Beckles fed the rookie from York University the ball into the box, where she was met by a charging Lady Pioneer ‘keeper. Donaldson maintained control after the attempted tackle and lobbed the ball over the fallen goalie into the net to give Toronto the early 1-0 lead. Toronto continued to attack, and had numerous chances throughout the rest of the first half and to being the second, but were unable to finish to extend their lead.

The Lady Lynx put the game away midway through the second frame, when Oakville’s Victoria Miliucci found Tessa Dimitrakopoulos open in the box, and sent her the ball in the 68th minute. The Ryerson striker was brought down by the Western Mass ‘keeper, and was awarded a penalty kick, which she calmly and decisively slammed home for the 2-0 lead. The Lady Lynx back four of Beckles, Kelsi Landry, Kiley Snow and Kayla Afonso were outstanding in defense, preserving the clean sheet for Gumiela in her first start and giving Toronto the well-earned victory.

Toronto returns home this Wednesday, May 21, to open their home schedule with their annual School Day matinee match at Varsity Centre at 11:00 AM against the London Gryphons. The club will also hold its annual Press Conference and Meet the Lynx/Lady Lynx luncheon on Tuesday, May 20 at 11:00 AM at the Toronto Travelodge Toronto Airport on Dixon Road in Etobicoke.

The Toronto Lady Lynx’ next game is home to the London Gryphons at Varsity Centre on May 21 at 11:00 AM.
