LADY LYNX HEAD TO WESTERN MASS TO KICK OFF 2008 SEASON
U20 Men Open Season; Lynx to Host Poker Night

THURSDAY MAY 15, 2008 (TORONTO, ON) The Toronto Lady Lynx begin their 2008 W-League campaign this weekend with a road trip to Ludlow, Massachusetts for a Northern Division encounter with the Western Mass Lady Pioneers. The match, scheduled for a 3:00 PM kick-off on Sunday afternoon, May 18, will be the first-ever meeting between the two clubs, as Western Mass joined the Northern Division during the off-season along with the London Gryphons. The Lady Pioneers finished the 2007 season with a 1-12-1 record while competing in the Northeast Division, and ended the season on a 12-game winless streak.

The Lady Lynx, in their fourth season, will look to build upon another successful season in 2007, which saw them reach the playoffs for the third consecutive season and reach the Eastern Conference semi finals, where they lost to the eventual champion Washington Freedom. The club finished the season with a 7-3-2 record, good for second place in the division.

Head coach Danny Stewart has assembled a cast of young players eager to take the club to the next level, led by 2008 Lady Lynx Best Offensive Player Stefania Morra. Morra led her York University Lions to a runner-up finish in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championships during the off-season, and will look to duplicate that success at the W-League level. Vonya Beckles returns to anchor the Lady Lynx backline, which will be a key factor in any Lady Lynx successes this season.

“We’ll look to our returning veterans to step-up and provide leadership and inspiration to our younger players this year. Our team is young, but they are talented and very hardworking and are anxious to prove themselves at the W-League level,” said Stewart.

The third-year coach will be without a number of core players from the 2007 squad, who have earned places on the Canadian Women’s U20 National Team as they prepare in Vancouver for the Women’s U20 World Cup to be held later in the year in Chile. Justine Bernier, Allysha Chapman, Lexi Marton, Tina Romagnuolo and Adrienne Ruhe Lischke will wear the Canadian colours as they compete for a spot in the November tournament.

The Lady Lynx return home for their annual 11:00 AM School Day match on May 21 against the London Gryphons at the newly opened Varsity Centre on the campus of the University of Toronto. The match will be the first of seven home games for Toronto this season, including games at Centennial Park Stadium and Varsity Centre, alongside Lynxfest matches to be played in Bolton and Oshawa. LYNX U20 MEN TO HOST WINDSOR

The Toronto Lynx U20 Men begin their 2008 season this weekend as well, hosting the new Windsor Spartans FC in a Midwest Division match-up. The Lynx U20’s established themselves as one of the elite U20 programs in North America last season, reaching the Super-20 League semi-finals and will look to continue that success into 2008. The game will be held at the Ontario Soccer Centre on Saturday May 17 at 4:00 PM and admission is free to all. This season’s squad is a culmination of last year’s U20 semi-finalists and the U17 Boys squad who reached the Super-Y League finals, and will form the core of future Lynx PDL teams.
