August 28, 2008 CSL Week 16 Summary (from CSL media release)
St. Catharines Wolves bid for playoff berth with impressive 5-1 victory
2008-08-28
St. Catharines Wolves sent a strong message of its intention to be one of eight teams to qualify for this year’s playoffs with a resounding 5-1 victory over Brampton Lions at Club Roma, St. Catharines in the only game played in the Canadian Soccer League Wednesday night. The Wolves have so far struggled to achieve a secure position for the playoffs and went into Wednesday’s game sitting fifth of seven in the National Division and ninth in the overall standings, a position if maintained would see St. Catharines without a playoff berth when the regular season ends at the beginning of October.
While the Garden City team failed to improve their overall position following the 5-1 win, it was the team’s strongest performance of the season and the mood at the final whistle was one of optimism that with six games remaining, a playoff berth will be achieved by the end of September.
Midfielder Joseph Priore opened the scoring for St. Catharines after just one minute of play and Alex Arbello tied the game for Brampton at the 36th minute mark. St. Catharines’ midfielder Matthew Cain put his side 2-1 up at 52 minutes, Tony Mermagas made it 3-1 at 66 minutes, forward Calvin Rosario increased the lead to 4-1 three minutes later and Carlo Arghittu rounded out the scoring for St. Catharines, a 5-1 final.
Brampton’s Miles O’Connor was ordered off following a second yellow card at 81 minutes.
