2008-07-13

Serbian White Eagles may not have enjoyed most of the possession against Toronto Croatia at Lamport Stadium on Sunday afternoon, but they capitalized on their goalscoring opportunities to defeat their Mississauga-based rivals 2-0 in a game highlighted as the weekend attraction in the Canadian Soccer League. Toronto Italia increased their lead at the top of the International Division with a 1-0 victory over Brampton Lions at Maple, just north of Toronto and in the third Sunday encounter, St. Catharines Wolves enjoyed a 2-0 home win over London City. On Saturday night, Trois-Rivieres Attak continued their winning way with a 3-1 victory over North York Astros in a well-played, entertaining encounter at the University of Quebec Trois-Rivieres. The Quebec team stretched their unbeaten streak to 10 games, jumping to a 9-point lead in the National Division standings. The weather knocked out one other game scheduled in the Canadian Soccer League Saturday with the postponement of the Windsor Border Stars vs. TFC Academy game scheduled for Windsor Stadium, a 7 pm kickoff. Heavy rain rendered the surface unplayable and the game was called off shortly before noon that day. On Friday night, Portugal FC lost two players to red cards but still came up with an impressive 4-0 shutout victory over the visiting St. Catharines Wolves at Lamport Stadium and in a second game in the CSL, Windsor Border Stars were too much for the still winless London City, a 3-1 result at Cove Road in London.

Sasa Viciknez struck the opening goal for Serbia at the 37th minute mark on Sunday, heading in a cross for his 7th goal of the season and although Toronto Croatia appeared to have an edge on the play, Serbia went two-up at the 71st minute on a brilliant solo effort by Dragan Radovic. He beat two men and sidestepped another before slotting the ball past Croatia goalkeeper Roy Blanche. It was also Radovic's 7th of the season in the 2-0 win.

Midfielder Matthew Palleschi assured Italia Shooters of three points with the only goal of the game at 52 minutes against Brampton Lions at Maple. It was a well-struck free kick that earned the points for the former Shooters' player who attracted the attention of Montreal Impact of the United Soccer Leagues' First Division during the past two years.

Italia now have 22 points from a 7-3-1 record and continue to lead the International Division, while Brampton Lions are second in the National Division with a 4-4-3 record for 15 points.

St. Catharines Wolves picked up their third win of the season with a 2-0 shutout of London City at Club Roma in the third game on Sunday. Tony Marmigas scored with a shot from the left wing at 24 minutes to open the scoring and Arnaldo Magnotta made it 2-0 at 48 minutes.

Trois-Rivieres Attak take an impressive 9-point lead at this mid point in the season with a 7-1-3 WLT record for 24 points, while the Astros have a 4-4-2 record for 14 points, both teams in the National Division.

Erik Elmauer assured Border Stars of the victory, scoring his team's third goal at 90 minutes, a 3-1 final.
