TFC ACADEMY DEFEAT ST. CATHARINES WOLVES 2-0, LIONS AND CROATIA TIE 1-1 SUNDAY...all the weekend details 2008-07-06

TFC Academy defeated St. Catharines Wolves by a 2-0 score at Club Roma in St. Catharines, while in Brampton the Lions were held to a 1-1 tie by Toronto Croatia at Victoria Park, two games in the CSL Sunday afternoon. On Saturday, Trois-Rivieres Attak took a commanding lead at the top of the National Division with an impressive 4-0 victory over Italia Shooters at Trois-Rivieres while in Windsor the visiting North York Astros improved their position in the standings with a decisive 4-1 win over the Border Stars. There were three games on Friday night, with Toronto Croatia closing the gap at the top of the International Division with a 1-0 narrow victory over Portugal FC at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga and just a few kilometres to the north in Brampton, the Lions went down by the same 1-0 score to Serbian White Eagles. In the third game Friday, London City picked up their first point of the season, a 2-2 draw with TFC Academy.

Forward Adrian Pena opened the scoring for TFC Academy on Sunday, scoring from the penalty spot at 21 minutes following a tripping incident inside the box and TFC were awarded a second penalty at 52 minutes which Pena failed to score. Daniel Di Biago did make it 2-0 for TFC at 53 minutes, however, driving the ball past Wolves' goalkeeper Claudio Perri from a corner kick.

St. Catharines were reduced to 10 men when midfielder Rudy Pikuzinsky was ordered off at 68 minutes shortly after entering the field as a substitute and Wolves' coach James McGillivray was ordered from the game at 73 minutes due to dissent.

The academy team improve to 4-7-1 WLT for 13 points, while St. Catharines Wolves are at 2-5-1 for 7 points.

Toronto Croatia opened the scoring at just two minutes in the game against Brampton Lions at Victoria Park on Sunday afternoon, his second of the weekend, but Daniel Nascimento struck his 11th goal of the season to tie the score at 1-1. The Lions' forward drove the ball from outside the 18 yard line to catch the top corner well out of reach of Croatia 'keeper Roy Balnche.

Croatia are now tied with Itaalia Shooters for top position in the International Division with a 5-1-4 record for 19 points, while Brampton move into second place in the National Division with a 4-3-3 record for 15 points.

In Trois-Rivieres on Saturday, Christian Munez opened the scoring for the Attak at the 37 minute mark and forward Nicolas Lesage made it 2-0 20 minutes later. Hector Contreras struck the third Attak goal at 72 minutes and defender Alex Surprenant made it 4-0 at 79 minutes.

Trois-Rivieres are undefeated in nine games going back to the 1-0 loss to Italia on May 25. The Quebec team now has a 6-1-3 WLT record for 21 points.

North York Astros were impressive in their 4-1 win over Windsor Border Stars, also on Saturday, taking control of the game early with a goal at 6 minutes by forward Go Nagaoka. Windsor tied the score 1-1 at 26 minutes with a goal by Tommy Eller, but the Astros looked much the best and just five minutes later Selvin Lammie scored the first of two goals to make it 2-1. At 53 minutes Lammie increased the lead to 3-1 and North York took a 4-1 lead on a goal at 70 minutes by Jason Alvarez.

The Astros are third in the National Division with a 4-3-2 record for 14 points, one less than Brampton Lions.

In Friday's action, Croatia’s Hugo Herrera scored his team's lone goal at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga when the 29 year-old midfielder beat Portugal ‘keeper Michael Da Silva and two defenders to find the net from 16 yards at the 42nd minute mark. Toronto Croatia moved within a point of league-leading Italia Shooters, the Mississauga-based team now has a 5-1-3 WLT record for 18 points.

Also on Friday, Sasa Viciknez struck his 6th goal of the season and an important one it was in the Serbian White Eagles in their 1-0 victory over Portugal FC. Viciknez scored from the penalty spot after referee Steve DiPiero awarded the penalty against Brampton goalkeeper Adrian Ibanez in a goalmouth collision.

Serbia moves up one position to third in the International Division, they have a 4-3-2 record for 14 points and Brampton Lions also have a 4-3-2 record for 14 points in the National Division.

Daniel Tannous led TFC Academy with two goals in their 2-2 tie with London at the Cove Road ground, he scored the opening goal at 11 minutes and after London took a 2-1 lead on goals by Musa Sirleaf at 16 minutes and Andrew Loague at 27 minutes, Tannous also scored the tying goal at 88 minutes.

The result gave London City their first point of the season in a game which could have gone either way, particularly it could have gone in favour of London when midfielder Roberto Molina had opportunities in the first half and later when the home side gained a man advantage after TFC Academy’s Latwayne Anderson was ejected at the 56th minute mark.
