Italia Shooters extend lead in International Division with 4-1 Canada Day victory over Portugal FC 2008-06-26

Italia Shooters defeated Portugal FC 4-1 at Maple on Tuesday to extend their lead in the International Division to four points over second place Toronto Croatia, the only game played in the CSL on Canada Day. Over the weekend, the St. Catharines Wolves vs. Brampton Lions game scheduled for Club Roma in St. Catharines on Sunday night was postponed due to poor ground conditions following heavy rain earlier in the day.... Trois-Rivieres Attak travelled to Oshawa Civic Stadium Friday night, then Lamport Stadium on Saturday to score back-to-back victories over TFC Academy in CSL action over the long holiday weekend.The Quebec team strolled to a 4-0 win over TFC Academy on Friday and 3-0 on Saturday. In one other CSL game played Saturday, Toronto Croatia bounced back after being down 2-0 to tie North York Astros 2-2 at Esther Shiner Stadium in north Toronto.In other CSL games played Friday, St. Catharines Wolves defeated the winless London City by a 4-0 score, Portugal FC came back from a 1-0 deficit to tie Serbian White Eagles 1-1 at Lamport Stadium and Brampton Lions were held to a 1-1 tie by Windsor Border Stars.

Italia Shooters took the lead on a goal at 12 minutes by Frank Jonke and Jonke made it 2-0 for the York Region team 14 minutes later. Portugal's Emerson Fiti reduced the lead to 2-1 at 40 minutes with a free kick from 25 yards, but Jason De Thomasis struck twice, both from close range for Italia at 75 minutes and just before the final whistle.

Italia Shooters are at 6-2-1 WLT with 19 points and Portugal FC have a 3-2-2 record for 11 points.

Charles Gbeke opened the scoring 22 minutes for Trois-Rivieres to take a 1-0 lead over TFC Academy on Saturday afternoon and two goals by Pato Aguilera at 40 minutes and 51 minutes sealed the victory, a 3-0 final score.

Jonathan Hurtis scored twice at 13 and 68 minutes to give North York Astros a 2-0 lead at Esther Shiner Stadium, also on Saturday and just when the Astros appeared headed for a victory, Toronto Croatia forward Tihomir Maletic struck with two quick goals at 74 and 75 minutes to tie the score 2-2.

Massimo Di Ioia opened the scoring at the 27th minute mark for the Attak at Oshawa Civic Stadium on Friday night, Pierre-Rudolph Mayard added a second at 45 minutes, Hector Contreras made it 3-0 at 79 minutes and Alpha Bah made it 4-0 at 90 minutes.

Trois-Rivieres are top of the National Division with a 5-1-3WLT record for 18 points.

Also on Friday, St. Catharines Wolves defeated London City 4-0 on goals by by midfielder Scott MacLennan at 15 minutes, Matthew Cain made it 2-0 at 27 minutes, Carlo Arghittu scored a third at 60 minutes and Stefen Kamendy rounded out the scoring at the 80th minute, a 4-0 final

In the Game of the Week on Rogers TV Friday night, Dragan Radovic scored his sixth goal of the season to give the visiting Serbian White Eagles a 1-0 lead at the 62nd minute, but Emerson Fiti struck an equalizer from a direct free kick for Portugal FC 16 minutes later, a 1-1 tie.

Daniel Mascimento kept up his goalscoring momentum with his 10th of the season at 24 minutes to give Brampton Lions a 1-0 lead at 24 minutes, but Aaron Byrd struck his 5th of the season for a 1-1 tie at Victoria Park in Brampton.
