Toronto FC continues roster shakeup
LARRY MILLSON

Globe and Mail Update

TORONTO — Toronto FC has acquired defender Marvell Wynne, son of the former major-league baseball player with the same name, in a trade with the New York Red Bulls and might be adding another defender in another deal.

Wynne, who turns 21 next month, was benched in the Red Bulls' last game for the first time since he took over as the starting right back last July in his rookie season.

Wynne, who attended UCLA, will be reunited with Mo Johnston, Toronto FC's head coach, who was with the Red Bulls when he traded up to make Wynne the first player taken in the 2006 MLS draft.

"He makes up for his mistakes with quickness," Johnston said Wednesday at BMO Field, where Toronto FC was training. Wynne will probably practise with the team Thursday.

According to sources Johnston was in the process of obtaining left back Kevin Goldthwaite, 24, from the Houston Dynamo and Houston's first-round draft pick in 2008 for midfielder Richard Mulrooney, who apparently was not happy about playing in Canada.

"I can't comment on anything right now," Johnston said Wednesday afternoon about the possible deal with Houston.

But it makes sense.

Johnston said earlier in the day that he intended to make another move after obtaining Wynne and striker Danny Dichio from Preston North End in England and that player would be a defender.

Obtaining Houston's first-round pick also compensates for the second-round pick and partial allocation that Toronto sent to the Red Bulls for Wynne.
