Toronto FC trade for Mulrooney

TORONTO (CP) - Toronto FC acquired veteran midfielder Richard Mulrooney from FC Dallas on Tuesday, in exchange for a 2008 first-round draft pick and cash.

Mulrooney, 30, was named the MLS Comeback Player of the Year last year when he had one goal and nine assists in 25 games. The eight-year MLS veteran was also named a commissioner's pick for the 2006 MLS all-star game in which MLS defeated Chelsea 1-0.

The previous year, Mulrooney tore a knee ligament and saw action in just seven games.

Toronto head coach Mo Johnston said the price was right for Mulrooney.

"He's a very good competitor, I've always liked the way he plays," Johnston said in a release from South Carolina where the expansion team is training.

Prior to the last two years in Dallas, Mulrooney spent six seasons in the MLS for San Jose and was twice named an all-star.
