Toronto FC trades for Togolese youth

Togonian on board

TORONTO (CP) - Toronto FC acquired forward Abdoulaye (Abbe) Ibrahim from the New York Red Bulls on Thursday in exchange for allocation money and a fourth-round pick in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft.

The 20-year-old from Togo signed with NYNJ Metrostars in March 2005, collecting two goals and three assists in 16 games. He returned to Togo last year and did not play in Major League Soccer.

The five-foot-nine, 155-pounder trained with Manchester United and Scotland's Hearts during portions of the 2005 pre-season.

"He's very hungry," Toronto FC coach Mo Johnston said in a release. "He's lightning quick, and causes defenders a lot of problems."

Ibrahim, a Togolese youth international, is the first player from Togo to play in MLS.

Also Thursday, Toronto announced details of its schedule at the Carolina Cup next month in South Carolina. The expansion team will play the MLS champion Houston Dynamo on March 24, the New York Red Bulls on March 28 and the Charleston Battery on March 31, all in Daniel Island, S.C.
