Match Summary:

The Toronto Lynx earned their first victory in the PDL with a thrilling 2-nil victory over the host Indiana Invaders this evening in South Bend, Indiana. The loss was the first of the year for the Invaders, dropping their record to 2-1-2 (8 points), while the Lynx’ record improves to 1-2-2 (5 points) to open the season.

The host Invaders came out strong on their home turf, and controlled much of the play early in the game. Toronto keeper Chris Baker was stellar in net however, and a number of huge saves kept the score level, and served to inspire his Lynx team-mates. The Lynx began to exert control as the half progressed, and their tenacious effort was rewarded in the 44th minute when defender Jamie Fairweather headed home a loose ball during a scramble in the Invaders goalmouth following a Toronto corner kick. The goal was his first in his career, and sent the Lynx into the locker room on a high.

The team came out to start the second half, and the team continued to manufacture quality scoring chances throughout the frame. Luke Stedmond, making his debut for the club, added an insurance marker in the 79th minute and sealed the match for Toronto when he slammed home a Cam Medwin cross. Chris Baker earned his first career shutout for the Lynx in the victory.

The Lynx road trip continues on Saturday evening with a date against the defending Central Conference champions the Chicago Fire Premier at 8:00 PM Central. The Lynx and the Fire Premier battled to a 2-2 tie at Centennial Park Stadium on May 25th in their first ever meeting. Three more road games will follow Saturday’s encounter, with stops in Michigan, West Michigan and Fort Wayne before the team returns home on Sunday, June 24 for a 6:00 PM return match against the Indiana Invaders, who will seek to avenge tonight’s defeat.
