Match Summaries:
The Toronto Lynx and Lady Lynx suffered vastly different fates this afternoon under bright skies at Centennial Park Stadium in Etobicoke. The Lady Lynx opened their pre-season schedule with a 3-0 romp over the visiting Rochester Rhinos, while the Lynx fell to the West Michigan Edge by the same score as they opened their 2007 season and made their debut in the Premier Development League of the USL.
The Lady Lynx started with a fury, and pounded the visitors with a relentless attack, and were rewarded quickly. Newcomer Stefania Morra scored beat the Rochester twice in the early going for goals, in the 19th and 25th minute, to put the hosts up 2-0. She earned her fifth point of the afternoon late in the match, when her 90th minute feed found fellow rookie Adrienne Ruhe Lischke for the Lady Lynx third goal of the afternoon. Toronto will open their regular season with a trip to Rochester for a return match on Friday May 25 at 7:35 PM at PAETEC Park, before returning home for their regular season opener on Wednesday May 30th at 11:00 AM against Hamilton, which will be the team’s ever-popular School Day match.
The Lynx started their PDL debut with a fury as well, but were unable to convert their many chances in the first half into goals. They continued to control play to open the second half, but in the 49th minute, West Michigan broke on a counter-attack against play, and midfielder Jake Stacy chested down an Edge cross and slammed it past a helpless Chris Baker in the Lynx net. Five minutes later, Tom Oatley broke free on a breakaway and made the score 2-0. Sub Joel DeLass capped off the scoring for the visitors when he corralled an errant Baker throw and drove the ball into an empty goal in the 63rd minute. Frank Jonke missed a golden chance in the 69th minute when his penalty strike was stopped by keeper Chris Austin for the Edge.
The loss is the Lynx’ third consecutive home-opening defeat, and ends a club-record 10-game undefeated streak at the friendly confines of Centennial Park Stadium.
The Edge and the Lynx will resume hostilities on Sunday afternoon at Centennial Park Stadium with their second match of the two-game series and the Lynx will look to avenge their opening-day loss. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 PM, and fans can purchase tickets at the box office two hours prior to the match.
