Match Summary:

The Toronto Lady Lynx earned their fifth victory of the season with a tense 2-0 victory over the Hamilton Lady Avalanche this afternoon at a muggy Brian Timmis Stadium in Hamilton. The win was the Lady Lynx’ fourth consecutive win over Hamilton, and Toronto wins the season series between the two clubs 2-0-0. The win raises the Lady Lynx’ record to 5-1-0 (15 points) and keeps them atop the Northern Division of the W-League. Hamilton falls to 0-4-0 on the season and are still in search of their first victory.

The first half was a tightly contested, even affair with neither team able to establish themselves. Hamilton’s best chance came in the 30th minute when Nicole Jagt’s powerful blast from 10 yards out caromed off the crossbar and was cleared to safety by the Lady Lynx defense. Adrienne Ruhe Lischke had Toronto’s best chance late in the period when she found herself alone in the Hamilton goal area late but she was unable to get full control of the ball and her shot went off-target.

The Lady Lynx came out stronger in the second half, and began to control the midfield. The team launched a number of attacks on the Hamilton goal, but were unable to score due to a combination of tight defense by the Lady Avalanche and a lack of finish by the forwards. Hamilton launched a series of counter attacks against play, particularly after sub Danya Barsalona entered the match, but they fell victim to strong play by keeper Justine Bernier and a number of close offside calls, and the score remained level until late in the half.

The Lady Lynx clinched the game in the 85th minute when former Hamilton striker Brittany Bisnott found a juicy rebound all alone in front of the Hamilton net and slammed the ball home. Toronto added an insurance goal in injury time when Tina Romagnuolo dribbled into the box and was brought down by Lady Avalanche defender Shundel Francis. Daniela Schwarz calmly converted the ensuing penalty kick to seal the match for the visitors. Bernier earned her league-leading 5th shutout of the season in goal for Toronto.

“Hamilton’s a much improved squad, and they gave us quite a game,” said Lady Lynx Head Coach Danny Stewart. “I’m proud of the way our players responded after a tough first half, and they showed great character in winning the game.”

The Lady Lynx remain on the road for their next four games, including two stops in Ottawa against the Fury. The Lady Lynx return to Toronto on Wednesday July 18 for a 12:00 PM match against the Rochester Rhinos on the team’s annual Youth Day matinee. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Lynx ticket hotline at 416-251-4625 x 31 or at the Centennial Park Stadium box office 2 hours prior to kick-off.
