CROATIA - EAGLES GAME OCTOBER 2 CRUCIAL
Monday - September 24, 2007
Serbians take 4-pt lead

Serbian White Eagles became favourites to win the International Division following a 5-0 romp over North York Astros, Canadian Lions surprised Italia Shooters 2-1 and Toronto Croatia are still unbeaten following a 1-1 tie with Portuguese Supra, three games in the CSL Sunday night.

Serbia’s Sasa Viciknez opened the scoring for his team at Esther Shiner Stadium, his 11th of the season at 38 minutes, Gabriel Pop added two at 54 and 59 minutes, his 13th and 14th of the season, midfielder Mihailo Bacanin scored the fourth and Zoran Kokot rounded out the scoring for a 5-0 result.

With their 13-4-2 WLT record for 41 points, Serbian Eagles open a 4-point lead in the International Division race over second place Toronto Croatia with their unbeaten 9-0-10 for 37 points and three games remaining. Italia Shooters are third at 10-4-6 for 36 points and two games remaining. Serbian Eagles are in a strong position to win the division and a game with Toronto Croatia on October 2 will play a big part in that decision.

North York Astros are at 4-12-4 for 16 points and still bidding for a playoff berth.

Canadian Lions took a 2-0 lead with goals by Milos Bucinic at 50 minutes and Evan Milward, his 14th of the season two minutes later in the game with Italia Shooters at The Soccer Centre. Italia Shooters responded with a goal by Des Humphrey at 55 minutes for a 2-1 score and the York Region-based team applied late pressure for an equalizer. But Lions held on for the three points to take a big step forward in their bid for one of the three remaining playoff berths.

Lions have a 4-7-8 record for 20 points, while Italia Shooters are at 10-4-6 for 36 points.

Toronto Croatia maintained their unbeaten record, now stretched to 19 games and it was Robert Grnja who put Croatia in the lead at 73 minutes at Centennial Stadium and another victory looked likely until Alex Arbelo tied the game for Portuguese Supra with just three minutes remaining.

Croatia have a 9-0-10 record for 37 points, while Portuguese Supra improve to 4-12-4 for 16 points and still seeking a playoff spot.
