CROATIA UNBEATEN STREAK NOW 18 GAMES OVER 4 MONTHS
Friday - September 21, 2007
But Serbia showing the way

Serbian White Eagles took top spot in the International Division with a controversial last minute penalty kick 2-1 victory over North York Astros and Toronto Croatia stretched their unbeaten streak to 18 games with a 2-0 shutout win over Portuguese Supra, two games of high interest in the CSL Friday.

The teams were scoreless well into the second half at Centennial Stadium, but Serbian White Eagles took a 1-0 lead on a goal by defender Ricardo Manguia at 63 minutes. Just two minutes later, Selvin Lammie of North York tied the game 1-1 and both teams fought for a winner. Serbia needed three points to strengthen their position in the standings and the Astros needing the points to secure a playoff berth as the teams edge closer to the end of the regular season.

With just one minute remaining, Serbian White Eagles were awarded a disputed penalty kick and forward Sasa Viciknez struck the ball into the left corner out of reach of Astros’ goalkeeper Ratko Ivanovic for the 2-1 win. Marco Pacione of North York Astros was ejected just before the kick was taken.

Serbian White Eagles take over the top position in the International Division with a 12-4-2 WLT record for 38 points, while North York Astros remain at 16 points with a 4-11-4 record and still without a playoff berth with three games remaining. The first of the three games bring together the same two teams at Esther Shiner Stadium on Sunday.

Toronto Croatia were close to dominating their game with Portuguese Supra at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga and it was midfielder Jonathon Bustamante who opened the scoring for Croatia at the 10th minute mark. The home side missed a number of good opportunities to increase their lead and it was forward Hugo Herrera who eventually found the net at 67 minutes for a 2-0 score which was the final result.

Toronto Croatia continue without a loss following 18 games and more than four months of competition and now have a 9-0-9 record for 36 points, good for a second place tie with Italia Shooters in the International Division. Portuguese Supra remain at 15 points having played 19 games for a 4-12-3 record, one of five teams battling for two remaining playoff positions.
