LATE PENALTY FOR 2-2 TIE AT ST. CATHARINES
Wednesday - July 18, 2007
First win foiled

A late penalty kick scored by St. Catharines forward Antonio Stranges snatched victory from Canadian Lions just when the visitors appeared headed for their first victory of the season in the only game played in the CSL Wednesday night.

The hard-fought, physical encounter at Club Roma in St. Catharines, which ended in a 2-2 tie, set up a clash of the home side bidding for the National Division title while the Lions went in confident of snapping a winless streak of 11 league and cup games in the 2007 season.

Evan Milward opened the scoring for the Lions at 33 minutes, a 1-0 lead at the interval, but St. Catharines’ midfielder Tony Mermigas tied the game at the 63rd minute mark. Lions’ Dragisa Klisara put his team ahead 2-1 at 74 minutes and the International Division side looked confident to pick up their first win.

But it all went wrong for Canadian Lions when Milward brought down St. Catharines midfielder Tanardo Copeland in the box. Stranges drove the ball past Lions’ goalkeeper Matthew Willis from the spot at 84 minutes for a 2-2 final score.

St. Catharines Wolves are at 3-3-3 WLT for 12 points, good for second place in the National Division, while Lions are at 0-6-5 for five points in the foot of the International Division.
