GS United advance
GS United of the Ontario Soccer League, one of Canada’s top amateur teams based in Scarborough, defeated AEK London in penalty kicks for a 2-1 victory in the Preliminary Round of the Open Canada Cup at Victoria Park, Brampton Monday afternoon.
It was a hard fought close encounter throughout and London’s Mike Pereira put his team ahead beating GS United goalkeeper Brian Bowes at 22 minutes. Gus Kouzmanis tied the score for GS United at 36 minutes and the 1-1 tie held up through to regulation time and two periods of 15 minutes to take the game into penalty kicks.
GS United outshot the London-based team, 3-0, in penalty kicks to take the victory.
GS United will now meet the CSL’s Italia Shooters in the Open Canada Cup Second Round, to be played mid-July.
In other Open Canada Cup action over the Canada Day holiday weekend, Windsor Border Stars defeated St. Catharines Wolves, 2-1, Friday night and in a game played at the Mount Royal district of Montreal Sunday, Jean Talon 2007 of Montreal scored a 5-1 Preliminary Round victory over the Capital City Ambassadors from Ottawa.
