WEEKEND WINS FOR WINDSOR, WHITE EAGLES
Saturday - May 19, 2007
Byrd strikes two

Two goals by Windsor striker Aaron Byrd gave his team a 2-0 home victory over London City at Windsor Stadium Saturday night while 24 hours earlier, Serbian White Eagles opened their account with a narrow 2-1 victory over visiting Trois-Rivieres Attak in the two games played so far this Victoria Day weekend.

Byrd struck with a penalty kick at the 59th minute for Windsor, following a scoreless first half during which the border team had the upper hand but solid work in the London goal by ‘keeper Tommy Bianchi kept his team level.

Windsor pressed to increase their lead, but it was not until the 89th minute that Woreth Sampson worked his way up the left wing to cross to Byrd who found the net to assure Border Stars of the win.

It was the home opener at Centennial Stadium in Toronto’s west end for last season’s International Conference winners Serbian White Eagles Friday night, a Serbian team fielding many players from their successful inaugural 2006 season.

The striking force of White Eagles’ Gabrial Pop and Sasa Viciknez, who hit 50 league and cup goals to finish one-two in last year’s scoring title, were both off the mark with the opening goal by Pop at 54 minutes and a strike by Viciknez at 72 minutes.

The 2-0 score held up until three minutes from time when Elkana Mayard found the net for Trois-Rivieres Attak, a 2-1 score. Attak captain Boubakar Coulibaly rallied his team for an equalizer in the three minutes of added time and the Serbian goal escaped two narrow attempts close to the final whistle.

The two teams meet again in Trois-Rivieres next Sunday, May 27 after the Quebec team meets Canadian Lions at Birchmount Stadium Sunday, a 4 p.m. start,
