POST-GAME REPORT: August 23, 2006
IMPACT 1 TORONTO 1

TORONTO – The Montreal Impact and the Toronto Lynx played to a 1-1 tie, Wednesday, at Centennial Stadium, in Toronto.

The Lynx opened the score on a penalty kick by midfielder Jamie Dodds in the 48th minute, after Mauricio Vincello tripped forward Matthew Palleschi in the 18-yard box.

The Impact tied the game up at the 70th minute on a header by Zé Roberto, following a corner kick by Leonardo Di Lorenzo.

The Impact played with a man advantage at the 32nd minute when Lynx midfielder Shawn Faria was ejected from the game, following a tackle on midfielder Zé Roberto.

“I think the referee was tough by granting a penalty kick, but he wanted to event things out after the red card,” explained Mauro Biello. “We got scoring chances, but the ball did not go in. We simply have to work harder in our next games.”

“Tonight’s result is frustrating,” said head coach Nick De Santis. “We have to do better if we want to win a championship. We nevertheless showed character by coming from behind and we got one more point in the standings.”

The Impact pressed the Lynx after the equalizing goal, especially in the final minutes of the game, with Joel Bailey missing his shot from the mouth of the net (87th) and Daniel Antoniuk unable to convert on a breakaway (90th).

Impact goalkeeper Greg Sutton made key saves at the 53rd minute with consecutive saves on Andres Arango’s point blank header, followed by a diving hand save on defender Rick Titus.

The Impact still remains in first place in USL D1 standings with 44 points, five points ahead of the Rochester Raging Rhinos. The Impact is already guaranteed a playoff berth.

Defender Mauricio Vincello, who received a fifth yellow card, will have to serve a one-game suspension.

Earlier in the day, goalkeeper Greg Sutton as well as defenders Gabriel Gervais and Adam Braz were selected by the Canadian national team for a friendly game against Jamaica that will be held in Montreal, at Claude-Robillard Sports Complex, on Monday, September 4.

Impact midfielder Kirk Wilson did not make the trip to Toronto. The 28-year-old midfielder requested a leave of absence from the club, for personal reasons, in order to return to his hometown, in Des Moines, Iowa, with his family.

The Impact will play its next game this Friday against the Virginia Beach Mariners at Claude-Robillard Sports Complex (8 pm, CJAD 800, Sport Plus XM-172).
