SILVERBACKS FALL 4-2 TO TORONTO; POOR PERFORMANCE LEADS TO LOSS

Friday August 4, 2006

The Atlanta Silverbacks fell 4-2 tonight to the Toronto Lynx in what was undoubtedly Atlanta’s worst performance of the year. Three detrimental defensive mistakes coupled with the hard-work of the Lynx led the ‘Backs to the unfortunate loss which takes their record to 8-7-4.

Atlanta got on the board first in the 16th minute when the team capitalized on a free-kick and took the opportunity to take the lead. Defender Antonio De La Torre took the free kick from about 30 yards out; his well placed kick landed perfectly on the head of Jason McLaughlin who headed it over the outstretched arms of Toronto’s goalie, Theo Zagar. The ‘Backs had a couple of great chances in the final minutes but were unable to convert – the half ended 1-0.

The Lynx made some substitutions to start the second half and evened the score four minutes into the half. Felipe Quintero saved the initial shot by Toronto but Kevin Jeffrey got the rebound and finished the ball past Quintero. After the Lynx tied the game in the 49th minute the Silverbacks were never able to recover and while they had some free kick opportunities they could not convert. Jeffrey got his second goal in the 66th minute and gave the Lynx the one-goal lead. Just two minutes later, Jeffrey assisted teammate Osni Neto for the Lynx third goal of the night – Jeffrey slotted the ball through to Neto who ran onto it and finished the goal. The Silverbacks’ suffering did not end there, the Lynx scored yet again on a free kick in the 72nd minute. Jamie Dodds took the kick which Quintero misjudged and thought was going wide, unfortunately the ball snuck inside the far post. The Silverbacks did all they could to battle back from the three-goal deficit. Atlanta cut into Toronto’s lead in the 96th minute when Machel Millwood went up with the Lynx keeper, Zagar; the ball bounced out and Liam George scored for the ‘Backs. Despite numerous near misses from Millwood and Fabian Dawkins, the 4-2 score stood for the remainder of the game.

The Silverbacks’ demanding schedule requires the team to take on the Rochester Raging Rhinos tomorrow night at 8:05 pm in Rochester. The Silverbacks will return home to face the Puerto Rico Islanders next Saturday, August 12 at 7:30 pm. The first 500 fans will receive another set of 2006 Silverbacks player cards.
