Attendance was announced as 1366 on this very hot and humid day with no wind to cool things down. I would say there were about 800 here which was still over double as last night. Maybe people are getting used to Sunday night games even though this was the one on local television. The ushers had enough cartons of pasta left over from last night to give everyone leaving a package. They gave out pizza coupons too for the first time as the Lynx finally scored at least three goals at a home game. (OK the Lady Lynx did it almost regularly this season). Wow forget the giveaways, the small crowd was really into this game; more than anything I’ve seen this year. Elvis Stojko took the opening kick off. Since his last Olympic medal in figure skating, he has really gotten into martial arts and did some demos with some exhibitors for tonight’s “East Meets West Night”.
Lynx coach Duncan Wilde had a tough decision to make at 40 minutes when Jamie Dodds was injured with an elbow from team-mate Niels Dekker as Dekker backed into him as he was jumping for a ball near the center line. Dodds had to come off because of a nosebleed and the Lynx elected to play short for the last seven minutes of the half. Seattle scored soon after a cornerkick so it looked like the coaches faith in Dodds backfired. However Dodds played the entire second half and became the cornerkick man after Robbie Aristodemo was subbed out at 66 minutes. Dodds put a perfect cornerkick in at 84 minutes for the winning goal. Dodds switched from his bloodied #13 to a clean #35 jersey. Since the Lynx were wearing black, we didn’t really see how bad this injury was.
Cam Weaver scored one for the Sounders to make it 15 goals which is equal to the entire Lynx team goal production for the year. He was neutralized effectively by Rick Titus especially after 32 minutes when he drew a Yellow card for elbowing Titus when both were jumping for a ball. This was near the end of a rough patch right after the Lynx second goal where referee Pierre Cantave almost lost control with some pushing matches breaking out but the second half was pretty tame as both teams wanted to go for victory.
Both goalies had to be sharp with Theo Zagar saving the game a minute before the Lynx scored the winner when he palmed the ball down of the top corner when Andrew Gregor blasted a close range shot. Just before that at 75 minutes, Stephen Keel leapt in center of box from 8 yards bounced a header that just missed the top right corner of the Lynx net. Good thing the grass was firm enough so it could bounce over the net. Dodds, DiPlacido, Neto, and Palleschi all had perfect chances to score for the Lynx and put the game away before they did but were off target. Chris Eylander robbed Palleschi twice at 56 and 72 minutes from 8 and 12 yards.
The Lynx had more chances than the Sounders in this game and unlike last night’s scoreless tie with Portland Timbers put some of their chances away. Their final goal was the result of the Sounders being caught short at the back and the defender and goalie worried that the ball would be crossed to a Lynx player who was racing in with a defender as a decoy.
The Lynx pull out of last place for at least a brief time passing Minnesota Thunder in the standings. Now they will be out of town for three weeks until Sunday August 20th at 6:00pm against Rochester Raging Rhinos. The time in between they will play four road games against USL opponents and a road game against Hamilton Serbians in the quarterfinals of the CSL’s Open Canada Cup.
