Match Summary:

The Toronto Lynx picked up their third victory this season, defeating the Atlanta Silverbacks 1-0 in front of 1949 fans at Centennial Park Stadium this afternoon.

Toronto came into tonight’s match after their penalty shootout win over the CSL’s Serbian White Eagles in Open Canada Cup play on Friday. Toronto had won three of their last four matches coming into tonight’s encounter.

Toronto came close to the opening goal in the 39th minutes when Jamie Dodds caught Atlanta goalkeeper Felipe Quintero well off of his line, but sent his shot from 40 metres out just wide of the goal.

The best chance of the half belonged to Toronto when Robbie Aristedemo’s corner was well headed towards goal by Lynx striker Damien Pottinger, whose effort was cleared off of the line by an Atlanta defender. The game remained scoreless at the first half whistle.

Toronto took the lead in the 58th minute when Robbie Aristedemo sent a long ball into Mat Paleschi who controlled to the left of goal before firing a low shot past Quintero and into the bottom right of the net.

Atlanta came close to an equaliser in the 84th minute when Fabian Dawkins headed a loose ball towards goal, but his effort was just wide.

Atlanta was reduced to 10 men in the 88th minute when Antonio Delatorre received a red card for an elbow to Lynx midfielder Kevin Jeffrey.

Toronto’s squad received a serious blow when Jeremy Shepherd had to be taken off of the field on a stretcher after an injury to his leg, and was not able to return to the playing field.

Fabian Dawkins came close to an equaliser again in the 90th minute when his shot from inside the area beat Lynx ‘keeper Zagar but was cleared off the line by defender Marko Bedenikovic. That proved to be the last chance in front of goal for both teams and it was 1-0 to Toronto at the final whistle.

Theo Zagar earned the shutout this evening, while striker Mat Paleschi scored his second goal this season. USL-1 All-Star Jamie Dodds received his 5th yellow card this season and will have to sit out Toronto’s next match.

Toronto improves to 3-10-3 this season and is now tied for 11th place with the Minnesota Thunder in USL-1 standings. Toronto has won three of its last four USL-1 games.

Toronto takes it winning record on the road Friday July 21st when they take on the Rochester Raging Rhino’s at PAETEC Park at 7:35 PM.
