Battery road win streak snapped in Canada
Toronto, Canada. The Charleston Battery’s two-match road win streak came to an end Sunday afternoon in Toronto as the Lynx ground out a 1-0 win. Playing its second game in as many days the Battery fought hard but came up just short as Toronto earned its second win of the season.

Toronto forward Kevin Jeffrey created a scoring chance in the 15th minute after the ball popped out to him 25-yards out. Jeffrey pulled the ball onto his right foot but his strike lifted over the cross-bar.

In the 35th minute Battery midfielder Ian Fuller peeled off to the left after receiving a deep diagonal pass. He whipped in a cross to the back post towards Luke Vercollone. Vercollone met the cross and hit a stinging full-volley at the goal that Lynx goalkeeper Theo Zagar just managed to turn round the goal.

Late in the first half the Battery threatened again after former Charleston defender Rick Titus conceded a corner-kick. Troy Lesesne curled in a cross and the ball dropped to the feet of Ben Hollingsworth. Hollingsworth managed to turn and shoot but his effort from six-yards out was smothered by Zagar on the goal-line.

Toronto almost took the lead in the 49th minute but were denied by a superb Keith Wiggans save. The ball was crossed to the back post where midfielder Jamie Dodds snapped a header down to Wiggans’ right. The ball got behind Wiggans and appeared to be headed into the goal but he managed to flick the ball away with his trailing hand.

The game-winner came in the 73rd minute after Toronto earned a corner-kick. The ball was played in and a first-time strike by forward Kevin Jeffrey cannoned off the cross-bar. Jaime Dodds got to the loose ball first and slotted home at the near-post.

The Battery had one final opportunity to tie it in the 90th minute as Lazo Alavanja played a free-kick into the box from the right-side. Forward Lawrence Smith met the cross at the edge of the six-yard box but his header missed just high of the goal.

The Charleston Battery returns to Blackbaud Stadium on Wednesday night for a Third Round Lamar Hunt US Open Cup fixture versus the Portland Timbers;
