The Toronto Lynx earned their first victory this season, defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 in front of 2235 fans at Centennial Park Stadium this afternoon.

Today’s match got underway at noon as the Lynx welcomed youth and community groups from across the Toronto area for the Toronto Lynx’ annual Youth Day.

Toronto took the lead in the 20th minute. Jamie Dodds picked up the ball 20 yards from goal and the USL-1 All Star chipped the ball expertly past Vancouver ‘keeper Tony Caig and into the top right corner.

Vancouver was back on equal terms in the 29th minute. Martin Nash took a shot from just inside the area that was cleared off the line by Lynx defender Rick Titus. The ball fell to Nash whose shot came off the crossbar but was headed in by former Lynx midfielder Sita-Tatay Matondo.

Toronto retook the lead a mere two minutes later. Jamie Dodds’ run down the right flank ended in a centering pass that was tapped in by striker Damien Pottinger for his third goal of the season. It was 2-1 to Toronto at the half.

Toronto came close to taking a two goal lead five minutes after the restart. Marko Bedenikovic took a powerful shot from 35 yards out that beat Caig but came off the crossbar.

Vancouver came close to an equaliser in the 70th minute. Martin Nash controlled a cross before firing a hard short that was well saved by Zagar. The rebound fell to Dave Testo who fired over the goal keeping the score line in Toronto’s favour.

Vancouver came close again in the 86th minute when Tony Donatelli headed a cross towards goal but could not beat Zagar who did well to save the shot.

Vancouver piled on pressure late in the game but Toronto stood firm at the back and it was 2-1 to Toronto at the final whistle.

Toronto was led to victory by an outstanding performance by Theo Zagar who made 6 saves through 90 minutes this afternoon.

Damien Pottinger scored his third goal for the Lynx today after joining the squad six games ago. USL 1 All Star Jamie Dodds earned a goal and an assist in today’s victory.

Toronto improves to 1-9-2 as a result of today’s victory and sits in 12th place of the USL First Division.

Toronto is next in action on Sunday July 9th when they host the Charleston Battery at Centennial Park Stadium at 6:00 PM.
