Attendance was announced as 2235 and the stands were full for this matinee game for Youth Day with mostly children from summer camps. It was a mild afternoon with a wind from the north that gave an advantage to the Whitecaps in the second half.
Before the game started the Lynx had not scored a goal at home all season (four games) and hadn’t won all season (eleven games) and here they were playing the first place team in the league who had only let in 13 goals in 16 games so I had no idea this would happen!
Former Lynx player Sita-Taty Matondo (in the first half) and Toronto area defender Adrian Cann looked good for the Whitecaps except Matondo kept being called offside. Whitecaps tried to shake things up a bit at 54 minutes by making a triple substitution with David Testo, Joey Gjertsen, and Tony Donatelli coming in for John Jones, Diaz Kambere, and Sita-Taty Matondo. At 63 minutes, Gjertson from his hands and knees on the Lynx end line back passed to Adrian Cann whose 8 yard shot was wide right. Whitecaps Jay Alberts had a 5 yard shot into the Lynx net at 54 minutes correctly called back for offside. At 68 minutes Martin Nash had a hard shot from 12 yards that Zagar blocked and Testo charged in and blasted an 8 yarder over the net. Lynx midfielders would continue to come back to break up Whitecaps setting up shots. Best other chance for the Lynx was at 48 minutes when Marko Bendenikovic chipped a 30 yard shot over players from right and the ball hits the bar and Jamie Dodds is checked off the rebound just inside the box.
Matondo had beaten an offside trap at 8 minutes and his 15 yard shot was stopped point blank by the sliding Theo Zagar. At 85 minutes, Tony Donatelli heads a 5 yarder up the middle that was into the chest of Zagar after receiving a cross from the left. Zagar fell but held the ball out of the net. This was only two minutes after Lynx Kevin Jeffrey got the ball in the Whitecaps box with his back to the net and two defenders but he swerved around and had his shot hit a defender’s hand on the kick but no Penalty kick was awarded by St John’s NF referee Rob Antle. Defender Rick Titus had headed away a ball in the box just before Donatelli got his chance. The Lynx looked more dangerous in the last ten minutes and the three minutes of added time because the Whitecaps were pushing forward although their timing was off and they got caught short at the back a few times. This was really the time of the most end to end action.
The Lynx next game is at Sunday against Charleston Battery at 6:00pm. This game will be broadcast live on Rogers Community Channel. This is a few hours after the World Cup Final game is broadcast on CTV. I expect while that game is on I’ll be at the CSL Caribbean Selects vs. Windsor Borderstars game before driving to Centennial Stadium to catch the Lynx game.
