ALL-STAR DODDS LEADS LYNX INTO PAIR OF GAMES
Midfielder named to USL All-Star Team; Lady Lynx embark on crucial road trip this weekend
TUESDAY JULY 4, 2006[TORONTO, ON] The United Soccer Leagues has announced the selection of Lynx midfielder Jamie Dodds to the USL First Division All-Star team, scheduled to take place in Cary, NC on Wednesday, July 19 at 8:00 PM. The match which will be broadcast live on Fox Sports World Canada, features the USL-1 All-Stars versus Sheffield Wednesday of the English Coca-Cola Championship League and features such league stars as Romario, Zinho and Mario Rodriguez from Miami FC, Mauricio Vincello and Gabe Gervais from the Montreal Impact and others.
Dodds will lead the Lynx into two important matches this weekend at Centennial Park Stadium as the club looks to win its first match of the season. The Vancouver Whitecaps will be making their annual to our city when the Lynx host the annual Youth Day sponsored by Pizza Pizza. Vancouver currently sits in first place in the league table with 25 points, but comes into the match on the heels of a 2-nil defeat at the hands of second-place Rochester. The loss narrowed the Whitecaps’ lead atop the standings to one point over the Rhinos. USL First Division Player of the Week David Testo leads the Whitecaps into the game, supported by Martin Nash, Joey Gjertsen and the goalkeeping tandem of Tony Caig and Josh Wicks. The Whitecaps defeated the Lynx 2-0 back on April 29, and are undefeated at home this season. On the road, on the other hand, Vancouver has been ordinary with only one win in eight matches away from Swangard Stadium.
Toronto returns to the pitch on Sunday evening, July 9, at 6:00 PM for a clash with the Charleston Battery for the Lynx’ annual Carib Fest presented by the club’s media partner, the Jamaican Gleaner. The Battery sit in ninth place in the league, 14 points ahead of the Lynx . The match will be the second in two nights for Charleston, and the Lynx hope to capitalize on this. Canadian defender Mark Watson and USL-1 All-Star midfielder Omar Daley lead the club on the pitch. Tickets for both matches can be obtained by calling 416-251-4625 x 31 or at the Centennial Park Stadium box office two hours prior to kickoff.
In other Lynx news, keeper Richard Goddard will miss Wednesday’s clash with Vancouver after receiving a straight red card on Sunday evening for handling the ball outside the box. Defenders Andres Arango and Tony Menezes along with midfielder Niels Dekker are questionable for both matches due to injury.
LADY LYNX HEAD TO VERMONT AND LAVAL
The Toronto Lady Lynx continue their push to the W-League playoffs this weekend on the road with a pair of Northern Division matches. On Saturday July 8th , the Vermont Lady Voltage will host the Lady Lynx at 5:30 PM in St. Alban’s VT, followed by an all-important match against the Laval Comets on Sunday July 9th in Laval. The Lady Lynx currently sit in second place in the division with a 6-1-1 record (18 points from 8 matches), behind the Ottawa Fury (21 pts from 8 matches) and ahead of Hamilton (16 pts from 10 matches) and Laval (14 pts from 7 matches). With only the top two teams in the division guaranteed a playoff spot, each upcoming match is very crucial. Deana Everrett is questionable for the trip after suffering a shoulder injury in yesterday’s 3-nil win in Rochester over the Rhinos, while Amanda Cicchini, Sylvia Forbes, Loredana Riverso, Vonya Beckles and Tanya Dennis will miss the match as a result of national team duty.
SUPER Y LEAGUE SUCCESS
