Match Summary:

Montreal midfielder Ze Roberto’s 81st minute strike broke Toronto hearts as his goal was the difference in Toronto’s 1-0 loss to the visiting Montreal Impact.

Toronto came into the match hoping to pick up its first victory of the season, and came close to taking an early lead in the third minute when Damien Pottinger connected with Jamie Dodds’ in-swinging corner. His header beat Montreal goalkeeper Andrew Webber but came off the crossbar and was cleared from danger by Montreal’s defence, keeping the game scoreless.

Jamie Dodds came close to giving Toronto the lead in the 15th minute when he sprung free of his marker, but fired just wide to the left of Webber’s goal. Dodds came close again eleven minutes later when he fired from just outside the area, but his attempt was just wide of the right of goal.

Montreal had an excellent chance to break the deadlock in the 38th minute after Montreal was awarded a free kick just outside of Toronto’s area. Mauricio Salles took the kick and sent a dangerous shot towards the top left of goal, but was denied by an exceptional acrobatic save by Toronto goalkeeper Richard Goddard.

Toronto almost took the lead in first half injury time after Kevin Jeffrey’s solo run ended in a powerful shot that sailed just wide of Webber’s goal. It was 0-0 after a first half in which Toronto out-shot Montreal 7-2.

Jamie Dodds, who was impressive throughout the first half, came close to opening scoring in the first play of the second half. Dodds ran onto a low pass and spun around past his marker before attempting to tuck the ball past Webber, who did well to slide in and make the stop.

Montreal was unlucky not to go ahead in the 71st minute when second half substitute Daniel Antoniuk headed a cross off of the crossbar. The rebound fell to Mauro Biello who fired a low hard shot that was excellently saved by a diving Goddard.

Montreal broke the deadlock in the 81st minute. Anthony Ribeiro sent in a floating free-kick that Ze Roberto headed down past Goddard and into the bottom left of the goal.

Toronto pressed ahead looking for an equalizer in but could not penetrate Montreal’s defence and it was 1-0 to the visitors at the final whistle.

Toronto goalkeeper Richard Goddard was impressive in goal, making 4 stops through 90 minutes of play. Montreal goalkeeper Andrew Webber made 5 stops en route to his shutout this evening. Jamie Dodds, who was dangerous all evening, recorded 5 shots in tonight’s match. Montreal’s Ze Roberto was the lone goal scorer this evening.

Toronto is now 0-7-1 as a result of tonight’s loss and remains in 12th position of the USL First Division. Montreal improves to 4-1-2 with tonight’s win.

Toronto is next in action on June 15th when they hit the road to take on Miami FC at Tropical Spark Stadium in Miami at 7:30 PM.
