Match Summary:

The Toronto Lynx picked up their first point of the season this evening, playing to a 0-0 draw against the Virginia Beach Mariners at Centennial Park Stadium.

Virginia Beach came close to taking the lead in the 12th minute after John Barry Nusum received a pass in Toronto’s box. His shot came off of a defender and sailed just over Toronto goalkeeper Theo Zagar’s goal. Nusum’s chance was the only clear-cut chance of the first half.

It was 0-0 after a defensively minded first half which featured only seven shots between both clubs.

Toronto came close to taking the lead early in the second half. Damian Pottinger volleyed a low cross in the 47th minute that was partially blocked by a Mariner’s defender, sending it just wide of Matt Nelson’s goal.

Toronto came close again in the 68th minute when Joe Mattachione contolled a passs with his chest inside Virginia Beach’s box. His turn eluded his marker, but with only Mariner’s ‘keeper Nelson to beat, he fanned on his shot leaving the game scoreless.

Virginia Beach had an excellent chance to break the deadlock in the 75th minute when Steve Shack headed a free kick from the right flank just centimetres wide of Zagar’s goal.

The 87th minute saw the best chance of the match. Toronto’s newly acquired Trinidadian striker Kevin Jeffrey hit a free-kick that made it past the wall and beat Mariner’s ‘keeper Nelson, but came off of the right bar.

Toronto continued to press in the dying stages of the match but Virginia Beach held off Toronto’s late offensive surge, and it was 0-0 as the final whistle sounded.

Toronto goalkeeper Theo Zagar made one stop towards his shutout this evening, while his Virginia Beach counterpart Matt Nelson made two stops.

Today’s result was the first point Toronto has picked up this season. Toronto improves to 0-6-1 as a result of today’s match and remains in 12th position of the USL First Division.

Toronto is next in action when they face the Montreal Impact at Centennial Park Stadium on Sunday June 11th at 6:00 PM.

Notes: The Lynx started the match with newly acquired striker Damien Pottinger up front. The Toronto native spent last season playing for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL Second Division, and spent the 2005/2006 indoor season with the St. Louis Steamers of the MISL. Toronto’s newly acquired Trinidadian and former Richmond Kicker striker Kevin Jeffrey came on in the 66th minute.
