48 min...Lynx RED card...Matthew Palleschi ran over to the sideline and pushed over RRR Eduardo DaSilva at the RRR bench. The referee was just blowing the halftime whistle. DaSilva was injured on the play. Back up goalie Patrick Hannigan jumped from the bench and onto the field to push Palleschi. This started a pushing match between players and benches on both teams over at the Rhinos bench. It turned out that Hannigan earned a RED card for his part in the incident but that still left the Lynx playing shorthanded for the rest of the game.

Attendance was announced as 2129 for the doubleheader as the ladies teams of these two clubs had played at 1:00pm. There weren’t that many people watching this game but of the maybe 800 people that were here at the end of the Lady Lynx game, about 500 didn’t stay for the second game as there was a one hour gap between games.
Mayor David Miller took the opening kick-off. From what I recall he was at the unveiling of the Major League Soccer franchise Toronto FC earlier this week (even I couldn’t make that) so this must be an election year.
The Lynx have now lost their first three games of this year by identical 2-0 scores. I think the score would have been a lot worse but the Rhinos wasted a lot of chances late in the game with weak chippers or shots wide or right to the goalie or over passed. Maybe they didn’t want to smash the Lynx and have other teams complain of the scheduling which pairs the two teams up for four games both this year and last year and which the Rhinos won all four games last year.
The Rogers play by play guy came into the booth at halftime (Rogers only covered the Lady Lynx game today) and commented the Lynx Brazilians looked really good today. They hadn’t even come into the game yet! He was confusing them with two other new players—Matthew Palleschi and Marko Bedenikovic who played in the CPSL league last year. Yeah they both did look good. Palleschi was fast and was pushed over a few times himself before his red carding. Bedenikovic had some free kicks and shots knocked away or off target. Chris Williams had some good shot attempts too either saved or off target. When two of the Brazilians did come into the game late, there wasn’t much doubt of the outcome. Neto bent a 25 yard free kick at the 80 minute mark at least 12 yards wide left that made him look like a local player. Let’s hope shots like this the Lynx don’t regret signing them and keep them on the bench.
There is cause for the Lynx to be optimistic but playing a man short for half the game and behind was too difficult against this Rhinos team. Some prelim reports had listed this as a rebuilding year for the Rhinos but they’ve played all three of their games so far on the road and have a perfect 3-0 record. Their first seven games are all on the road until their home opener at their brand new PAETEC Park home on June 3rd.
Goalie Scott Vallow earned the shutout with a few important saves including a shot while all alone when Matthew Palleschi got away a 15 yard shot after receiving a centering pass and his low shot had Vallow stop on a sprawl as the ball was right to him.
I notice well after the game that both the Lynx and Lady Lynx forward lines wear #9 and #15 but we know who had more success today. In the stands today were about 30 guys who were taking a break from the National Referees Conference at Humber College. I wonder if Justin Tasev's halftime call would have met their approval? Probably. Why did Palleschi have to go for that late check?
