Match Summary:
The Toronto Lady Lynx gave up an early lead and were eventually defeated 3-2 by the Ottawa Fury this evening in W-League Eastern Conference – Northern Division playoff final action at Keith Harris Stadium in Ottawa. Tonight’s loss means the Lady Lynx have been eliminated from the playoff race.
Toronto entered tonight’s match with a slight psychological disadvantage, having never defeated their Ontario rivals. Toronto’s best result against Ottawa came this past Sunday when both clubs played to a 1-1 draw at Centennial Park Stadium in Toronto.
Despite this, Toronto was keen from the start and took the lead just eight minutes into the match after a sole effort from Loredana Riverso ended with her putting the ball past Ottawa goalkeeper Taryn Swiatek.
Ottawa were back on level terms in the 41st minute. Rhian Wilkinson fed a pass into striker Amy Vermeulen who put her effort past Lady Lynx ‘keeper Anne Ogundele. It was 1-1 at the break.
Ottawa took the lead 4 minutes after the restart. Vermeulen’s pass was put away by Kelly Parker giving Ottawa the crucial lead.
The Fury were in comfortable position in the 62nd minutes when they were awarded a penalty. Vermeulen scored her second of the night by converting the spot kick.
Despite being two goals down, Toronto showed great resolve and continued to press forward. They were awarded for their efforts in the 84th minute when Katherine Marrosszeky found the back of the net, reducing Toronto’s deficit to 1.
Toronto continued to press forward in the final stages of the match but could not find an equaliser, and it was 3-2 to Ottawa at the final whistle.
Amy Vermeulen was most influential in tonight’s match, scoring twice, including a penalty, and assisting on Ottawa’s other goal. Ottawa out-shot Toronto 12-9 through 90 minutes of play.
Tonight’s loss means that Toronto’s 2006 W-League campaign draws to a close, while Ottawa advances to the Eastern Conference final mini tournament.
This seasons Lady Lynx performance was memorable, playing to a 7-1-4 record while scoring 37 goals and only conceding 4 in regular season play, leaving them in second place of the Eastern Conference – Northern Division. Toronto strike partners Deana Everett and Sylvia Forbes were among the best in the W-League this season. Forbes finished tied for 2nd place in goal standings with 15, while Everett ended the season tied for 9th place with 10 goals.
