Attendance was announced as 3939 on this very hot sunny day. This was Youth Day and the young fans were from summer schools and clubs from around the area. It was the biggest crowd of the year. All the seats in the stands were filled (kids being smaller than adults) and the spill over crowd watched from the grassy hill on the east side.

This was scheduled since the beginning of the year as being the Lady Lynx against Oakville Storm of the OWSL. I wondered why and thought it might have something to do with the Lynx breaking their ties with the Oakville Soccer Club in the off-season. Everything set up until yesterday but the Storm informed the Lynx that they weren’t showing up. A press release yesterday didn’t name the opponents but I didn’t think about it. The opponents turned out to be a mix of the Lynx Boys Under 15 and Under 16 teams from their academy. The U-16s are first in their division playing against other USL team youth teams and the U-15s are in second place against their age group.

Both teams were short of substitutes with the Lady Lynx having only two and the Boys with four. Since it was an exhibition, some of the players returned to the game once or twice.

The Boys had the advantage in the first half but they dominated the second half with the game being played mostly in the Lady Lynx end. Melissa Bigg was injured again at the 59 minute mark and did not return to the game after being helped from the field but it wasn’t a rough game.

Matthew Silva and Darren Nigli shared the shutout for the Boys. Both play for the U-15 team. Nigli came in at the 59 minute mark. Nigli needed some help at the 87 minute mark and injury time with defenders backing him up making two saves on the goal line. Tessa Roche also had a good shot in time-added which Nigli palmed wide of the net. Lady Lynx Anne Ogundele was actually good despite the five goals as she was often left all alone as the Boys ended up with many through balls and she made some point blank saves. The Lady Lynx defence couldn’t cope in the second half.

The game was a good tune up for the Lady Lynx against their rivals Ottawa Fury who are once again holding first place this year. The Lady Lynx have one more league game this year and that’s against the Fury this Sunday. They learned more today than if they’d played Oakville which I’d assume might have been comparable to the calibre of Sudbury Canadians which had them dominate that team. The change in teams also had the kids more interested in the natural girls vs. boys rivalry.

It was a good opportunity for me to see the players of the Lynx development teams. Midfielder Anthony Doran and goal scorer Macca Wilde (Coach Duncan Wilde’s son) are leaving next week for a three week tryout with Tranmere Rovers of the English league. It’s the team where Canadian international Ian Hume plays. Midfielder Ashtone Morgan is currently a member of the National Training Centre.

More details of the Lynx Men’s team are that Matthew Palleschi is trying out in Sweden. Jeremy Sheppard broke is leg (compound fracture) and dislocated his ankle and is out for six months.
