Match Summary:
The Toronto Lady Lynx won their seventh game this season, soundly defeating the Sudbury Canadians 9-0 at Centennial Park Stadium this evening.
Toronto took the lead two minutes into the match. Melissa Bigg picked up a loose ball just in front of Sudbury’s goal and smashed her effort into the roof of goal past Sudbury ‘keeper Katie McNamara.
It was 2-0 for Toronto on a Sudbury own goal two minutes before the half. Melissa Bigg sent in a low cross that was accidentally redirected by Stephanie Bell into her own goal. The score remained 2-0 in Toronto’s favour at the halftime whistle.
Toronto out-shot Sudbury 21-2 in the first half. The score line could have been much higher had it not been for outstanding play by Sudbury goalkeeper Katie McNamara who made seven stops through the first 45 minutes of play.
Toronto doubled their lead in the 60th minute. Sylvia Forbes picked up Finella Annand’s pass just inside the area and fired into the top right of goal. It was Forbes again right after the restart when her solo run down the middle of the pitch ended in a low shot to the right that beat McNamara. Forbes’ two goals brought her tally to 12 this season.
Toronto added to their tally in the 65th minute through second half substitute Christopoulos’ first goal of the season, while Sylvia Forbes earned a hat-trick in the 72nd minute off of Alysha Chapman’s pass. Scoring was rounded out by 77th, 79th and 87th minutes by Williams, Forbes and Chapman.
It was 9-0 for Toronto at the final whistle. Sylvia Forbes scored 4 goals in tonight’s victory and now has 14 this season, moving her up the W-League goal standings. Allysha Chapman scored once and assisted on twice through 90 minutes of play today.
Today’s margin of victory was a team record, surpassing the 7-0 record set last season and matched in Toronto’s first match this season. Toronto has now scored 36 times this season while conceding only 3 goals in eleven matches played thus far.
Toronto improves to 7-1-3 as a result of tonight’s victory and now sits in first place of the W-League’s Eastern Conference – Northern Division.
Toronto is next in action on July 23rd when they take on the Ottawa Fury at Centennial Park Stadium for their final W-League regular season game at 6:00 PM.
Notes: Both clubs have played each other once this season: that match ending 3-0 for Toronto on June 3rd. Toronto was without scoring sensation Deana Everett who is out nursing a shoulder injury, while Amanda Cichini, Loredana Riverso, and Vonya Beckles were absent for U-20 Canadian Women’s National Team duties.
