Lady Lynx Suffer First Loss this Season

Match Summary:

The Toronto Lady Lynx suffered their first defeat this season, dropping a 2-1 result away to the Ottawa Fury this evening at Keith Harris Stadium in Ottawa.

Toronto entered tonight’s match undefeated this season, boasting a record of 5-0-1 after their first six games. Ottawa sat atop the W-League’s Eastern Conference – Northern Division with a record of 6-1-0 prior to tonight’s encounter.

Toronto got off to a great start and seemed destined to extend their unbeaten streak when they took the lead in the fourth minute. Deana Everett connected with Tanya Dennis’ pass and slotted the ball past Ottawa goalkeeper Leisha Alica to give Toronto the early lead. Tonight’s goal was Everett’s eight of the season.

Ottawa were back on level terms from the penalty spot six minutes later. Leah Robinson put her penalty past Toronto goalkeeper Justine Bernier making it 1-1 after the first ten minutes.

Ottawa took the lead in the 19th minute after Annie Hamel’s solo effort ended with a strike that beat Bernier. It was 2-1 to Ottawa after 45 minutes.

Toronto pressed ahead in the second half looking for an equaliser, but Ottawa were equal to their efforts, and it was 2-1 to Ottawa at the final whistle.

Tonight’s match was a highly offensive one, with Ottawa out shooting Toronto 16 -10 through 90 minutes of play. Toronto goalkeeper Justine Bernier made 8 stops in tonight’s match. Deana Everett’s goal was her eight of the season, moving her into a tie for sixth place in the W-Leagues scoring race.

Toronto is now 5-1-1 after tonight’s encounter and sits second in the W-League’s Eastern Conference – Northern Division. Ottawa improves to 7-1-0 and tops Toronto in the standings.

Toronto is next in action on Monday July 3rd when the take on the Rochester Raging Rhinos in Rochester at 5:00 PM.

Notes: Toronto’s lost its two matches against Ottawa last season, dropping a 5-0 and 3-1 result to the club from the capital.
