Final Score:.......Toronto Lady Lynx..........0.............Laval Cometes...........0............

Attendance was not announced over the PA system but was given in the press box as 1051. I’d estimate the crowd was about 400. The game was being broadcast on Rogers Cable but since it will probably be replayed a few times for content, the fact the game was played while the World Cup France vs. South Korea game was on might marginally cut into attendance.

The weather was very hot and humid but surprisingly windy with gusty breezes effecting both games throughout the game. High crossed balls or kicks downfield might blow over the touch lines or be cut in power by the wind blowing them back. I thought if the Lady Lynx could survive the first half when they were running into the wind, they would have the advantage in the second half with the wind at their backs but they had problems with balls played forward that rolled right to the goalie.

Justine Bernier earned the shutout with a few charges forward to clear potential through balls and a few catches. Best saves were at 51 minutes when she made a point blank save from 5 yards off Sabrine Velier who had received a cross in the box and at 75 minutes when she dived to the right to push the ball wide of goal on Virginie Jacques’s 22 yard shot and then had Tanya Dennis block Sandra Couture’s 5 yard cross from along the right end line. The Cometes were caught offside quite a few times some of it wind aided. The Lady Lynx back four deserved praise for limiting the number of shots that were sent on net. Today’s backline (against weaker teams they only used three defenders) was Robin Rushton, Vonya Beckles (long throw-ins gave them balls into the Cometes box), captain Catharine Marosszeky and new recruit and national team player Tanya Dennis who fit in well. Dennis was moved up to midfield when defender Nicole Mailloux replaced forward Sylvia Forbes at 78 minutes. The defenders had to be wary of Cometes forwards Sandra Couture and Aimee Legault who had each scored three goals against Sudbury Canadians yesterday.

Marie-Pier Bilodeua earned the shutout for the Cometes. She was lucky not to be Red carded at 54 minutes when she was caught out of her box and tripped up Deana Everrett by grabbing her leg when Everrett pushed the ball past her and Bilodeua grabbed her leg. Referee Nenad Brankovic only gave the goalie a Yellow card and awarded the Lady Lynx a free kick from 22 yards.

At 68 minutes, Deana Everrett fed Sylvia Forbes a pass and on a 2 on 1 break with Allysha Chapman as a decoy, took a 10 yard shot from the right that was wide left of the post. At 72 minutes, Amanda Cicchini sent a 22 yard lofter up the middle that just lands over the net after Catharine Marosszeky took a quick freekick. Best play of the game was when Lady Lynx Jennifer Williams connected on a bicycle kick from 20 yards that was just wide left after and Allysha Chapman cornerkick from the right that was headed down for Williams to try her effort.

Cometes captain Amy Walsh had a mixed day as she was injured in at 21 minutes with a hurt ankle and collapsed inside the Lady Lynx net when the goalie punched forward Andreanne Gagne’s cornerkick in a crowd of players and started a fast Lady Lynx breakout. National team fans must have cringed as she is scheduled to play at this stadium next Sunday when Canada plays Italy. Lady Lynx don’t have any players on the national team. Walsh also earned the only other Yellow card of the game when she mouthed off 40 yards away from the play when the Lady Lynx were awarded a freekick deep in their own end.

The tie leaves both teams undefeated with the Lady Lynx holding a record of 5 wins and 1 tie and no goals allowed and the Cometes with a record of 4 wins and 1 tie. A good result for Laval to get a tie on the road after playing in Sudbury the previous day. This was the toughest game of the season for Lady Lynx although I expect the undefeated Ottawa Fury will still be the class of the conference. The Lady Lynx now play four games on the road and won’t be back for a home game until Saturday July 15th against Sudbury.
