Attendance was given as 1125 which seemed like a fair count as the stands were only about half full for this school day game. It was hot, humid and hazy with a slippery field as there was some very light rain on the drive over here.
Justine Bernier earned the shutout (her second of the year) but wasn’t kept very busy. The Lady Lynx kept enough players back to tie up forwards Brittany Bisnott and Heather MacDougall. Bisnott was like a football fullback and got away with bashing a few players aside. The goaltending tandem with of Anne Ogundele has shut out all their opposition this year. Hamilton hasn’t scored in their three games this year. That reminds me of a men’s team that I follow!
Forbes now holds the team lead with seven goals in three games. Deana Everrett follows her with six. Allysha Chapman, Loredana Riverso and second half sub Melissa Bigg had some good runs down the wing and good crosses but the defenders of goalie were able to clear up most of them.
Once the Lady Lynx found that Vonya Beckles was so successful in her long throw-ins into the box, they made sure she took almost all of them from any spot within 25 yards of the end line. She has been able to do this in their other games too. Van Boxmeer eventually was able to catch everything tossed into the box and in the last 20 minutes of the game, they kept Beckles at her position on defence. Also running sometimes 40 yards cross field in this hot weather just to take a throw-in will eventually tire you out. Hamilton had their specialist too with Chiara Greco (the owner’s daughter and former Lady Lynx player last season) taking all the close-in free kicks and corner kicks. She had the two best chances for the Lady Avalanche with an 18 yard free kick at the 42 minute mark which hit the top of the bar and deflected over the net and at 82 minutes when her 35 yard free kick forced Lady Lynx goalie Justine Bernier leap and punch the ball over the bar. No cards were given out by referee Jacques Tjonasan but it wasn’t a rough game at all.
The Lady Lynx now have a perfect 3-0 record however they now must go on the road for their next two games before returning for a game Sunday June 18th against Laval Comets.
