Attendance was given out as 782. That seems an exaggeration however it could be counting pre sold tickets because the weather was very cold and there was a misty rain started at the 6 minutes and got quite hard at 21 minutes to go along with the constant blustery north wind. Temperature was about 46F/8C.
The wind played a factor in the game. The Lady Lynx had the north end in the first half and I expected they’d push all out to score while they had the wind at their backs but they couldn’t get to any close-in shots. Through ball kicks would be exaggerated and roll right over the end line. Lady Voltage kicks would be hung up in the air. At the end of the first half I was worried as now the Lady Lynx would have to run into the wind. The rain had stopped but it was still windy. The Lady Lynx most of the time kept the ball nearer the ground knowing that air balls might blow back at them. Their defence was impressive with always another defender available even if the VLV player might get by two Lady Lynx players. Anne Ogundele earned the shutout without having to be spectacular. Kristin Luckenbill had won a gold medal in 2004 on the USA Olympic soccer team. She came up big until mistakes by her defenders left her alone on shots in the last 20 minutes. Easy to believer that the VLV grew tired at the end after playing last night in Sudbury and winning 3-0 then having a long bus ride here.
Sylvia Forbes scored all four goals for the Lady Lynx. She had one in last week’s game so ties fellow forward Deana Everrett who had five goals in their 7-0 victory over Rochester. What’s amazing is that the Lady Lynx lists last year’s W-League scoring champ Kimberly Warner who has not been a starter or sub in either game because she’s injured her knee playing indoor soccer and is still out of the line-up.
There weren’t a lot of sliding tackles on the wet field and Referee Yakov Keimakh had a pretty tame game to call with just a few warnings but nothing vicious.
Next game for the Lady Lynx is Wednesday May 31st against the new franchise Hamilton Avalanche which has five of last year’s Lady Lynx members playing for them.
