Sunday - August 13, 2006
Lynx nip Hamilton 1-0

Oakville Blue Devils, Toronto Croatia and Brampton Stallions all registered wins in regular season CSL action, the USL’s Toronto Lynx advanced to the Open Canada Cup semifinals and Serbian White Eagles lost to Harbourview FC of Jamaica in a Sunday night exhibition at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke.

Oakville midfielder Sam Hassam single handedly destroyed North York Astros with four goals in a 5-1 win at Bronte Stadium, to increase his tally to 10 goals for the season. Hassam scored at 27, 38, 40 and 83 minutes, while Gavin Russell notched the fifth Blue Devils’ marker at 92 minutes following a goal by Eugene Ishchak for the Astros at the 56th minute mark. Oakville now lead the National Division by five points with a 7-3-3 WLT record for 24 points in the season, the Astros have a 3-6-4 for 13 points and 6th place in the standings.

Toronto Croatia won a hard fought encounter 2-0 over Laval Dynamites at the Bois-de-Boulogne Stadium to keep pace with Serbian White Eagles at the top of the International Division. Croatia’s Tommy Ples opened the scoring at the 41 minute and Hayden Fitzwilliams made it 2-0 at the 71st minute mark. Croatia have suffered just a single defeat in their 13-game campaign and now stand at 8-1-4 for 28 points, two behind Serbian White Eagles with their 100 per cent record in 10 games played.

Brampton Hitmen lost two players in their game with St. Catharines Wolves at Victoria Park in Brampton, but still managed a 1-0 victory and three important points in the National Division. Hugo Herrera beat St. Catharines goalkeeper Kyle Mendonca at 10 minutes for the only goal of the match, to improve the Stallions’ record to 5-5-2 for 17 points. Ronald Nicholas was shown the red card for serious foul play at 79 minutes and Marlon Dyke was also ejected at the 84th minute mark after receiving a second yellow card. St. Catharines are at 5-6-4 for 19 points on the season.

The Toronto Lynx advanced to the semifinals of the Open Canada Cup with a 1-0 win over a courageous Hamilton Serbians at Brian Timmis Stadium in Hamilton. Former Vaughan Shooters forward Matthew Palleschi struck the winner at the 84th minute just when it appeared the quarterfinal game was heading for overtime. The Ontario Soccer League amateur side fought throughout in an effort to topple the USL First Division Lynx and there were times in the game the result could have gone either way. The Lynx advance with London AEK, Brampton Stallions, Ottawa St. Anthony Italia and possibly London City who have a wild card opportunity to enter contention as host of the Open Canada Cup Finals weekend at the beginning of September.

Loxely Thomas scored the lone goal for Harbourview FC of Jamaica at the 54th minute mark to give the Caribbean side a 1-0 victory over the CSL’s Serbian White Eagles in a friendly match at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke. Harbourview FC is considered one of the island’s most attractive teams and the game follows an earlier visit by a Jamaican team when Portmore United played Metro Lions Soccer Club at Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough two years ago.
