OPEN CANADA CUP - QUARTERFINAL DRAW
Thursday - July 20, 2006
Hamilton amateurs draw Lynx

Hamilton Serbians, an obscure but gutsy amateur team in the Hamilton and District Soccer Association, will have to get past the Toronto Lynx of the North American-wide USL First Division if they are to advance in the Open Canada Cup.

This is one of the matchups to emerge from the draw for the quarterfinal games of the increasingly popular competition, now in its fourth year.

The quarterfinal games will be played in August, with the finals set for London during the Labour Day weekend, September 2 – 4 with the final game on Labour Day afternoon.

Interestingly, the Lynx advanced following a penalty kick win over Toronto-based Serbian White Eagles on July 14. Hamilton Serbians, a member of the Ontario Soccer League, progressed after defeating the CSL’s Toronto Supra Portuguese, 3-2, on July 2, but they first attracted attention with a Preliminary Round 1-0 victory over Canadian amateur champions GS United of Ontario on May 21.

London has two teams in the last eight and by another quirk of fate, they were drawn together. The CSL’s pro London City will play at home against amateurs London AEK of the Western Ontario Soccer League.

The Third Round (Quarterfinals) draw is:

Italia Shooters vs. Brampton Stallions
London City vs. London AEK
Ottawa St. Anthony Italia vs. Windsor Border Stars
Hamilton Serbians vs. Toronto Lynx
