OPEN CANADA CUP UPDATE
Monday - July 3, 2006
London City in last eight
London City became the second team from that city to advance to the quarterfinals of the Open Canada Cup following a 4-1 defeat of Caribbean Selects at The Cove in London Monday.
The result was never in doubt following London City’s most impressive first half performance of the season so far which included two goals in three minutes and a 3-0 lead at the interval.
Defender Marco Peeters opened the scoring for London at the 16th minute mark and forward Michel Daoust struck the second after 19 minutes. Following further pressure on the Caribbean goal, midfielder Johan Wikman made it 3-0 for the City at the 39th minute mark.
Caribbean defender Ajani Stapleton scored for the Selects at the 70th minute, but the promise of the Toronto-based team saving the game dissipated with a fourth goal for London City when 17 year old Bruno Mota, the CSL’s youngest player, found the Caribbean net at the 89th minute mark.
In an earlier game played as a double header to the Open Canada Cup encounter, London Selects Women defeated Michigan Gators 6-1.
