Laval, Supra, Wolves crash
Laval Dynamites, Toronto Supra Portuguese and St. Catharines Wolves were all eliminated by senior amateur teams in the Second Round of the Open Canada Cup played Sunday, with North York Astros also going down to defeat along with Oakville Blue Devils. Winning teams were Brampton Stallions and Italia Shooters of the CSL and amateur teams Ottawa St. Anthony Italia, London AEK and Hamilton Serbians.
Brampton Stallions blitzed North York Astros with five second half goals following a scoreless first half in the game at Esther Shiner Stadium. Andre Andrade struck just two minutes after the interval, Helio Junion scored twice at 65 and 67 minutes, Hugo Herrera scored at 78 minutes and Kevin McIntosh completed the scoring at the 80th minute mark for a 5-0 final score.
Stallions’ Oneil Sang was ordered off at 83 minutes for serious foul play.
Ottawa St. Anthony Italia of the amateur Ottawa Carleton Soccer League handed the CSL’s Laval Dynamites a 4-2 defeat at the Bois-de-Boulogne Stadium in Laval. The game was even at 1-1 at the interval but Ottawa St. Anthony Italia outscored the Quebec side 3-1 in the second half for a 4-2 final score. Soulagmane Gagu, Danny Jones, Urbane Some and Abraham Osman were the Italia scorers, while Leo Incollingo and Mourad Bellari replied for Les Dynamites.
Following a hard-fought scoreless first half at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Italia Shooters scored twice after the interval including from the penalty spot for a 2-0 final score over Oakville Blue Devils to advance to Round Three. Joshua Jaramillo, a 19 year old midfielder from the Vaughan youth system, scored his first goal for the Shooters at 70 minutes and Danny Sanna made it 2-0 with the penalty kick at the 86th minute mark.
St. Catharines Wolves was the second CSL team to be eliminated from the Open Canada Cup by an amateur team on their home ground, beaten by a 1-0 score by London AEK, also the weather when the game was abandoned at 78 minutes due to severe thunderstorms and lightning at Club Roma in St. Catharines. London’s Haris Cekic scored his second goal in two days at the 67th minute and the game was abandoned 11 minutes later, but not before St. Catharines’ goalkeeper Claudio Perri was shown the red card following a goalmouth incident at 74 minutes. London AEK advanced to Round Two on Friday night following their defeat of Hamilton Argentina, 5-0.
Toronto Supra Portuguese was the third CSL team to be eliminated by amateurs with a 3-2 loss to Hamilton Serbians in a game with a delayed kickoff at Brian Timmis Stadium due to severe thunderstorms and lightning.
But the wait was well worth it to the home team and Serbian Hamilton midfielder Dragorad Milicevic who struck a natural hat-trick at 35, 40 and 70 minutes to lead his side to the victory. Toronto Supra Portuguese opened the scoring at 23 minutes on a goal by Gianni Annisi before Milicevic scored his three.The Supra Portuguese second goal came at 80 minutes from a penalty kick. Hamilton ended the game with 10 men when Pedja Jankovic was ejected after receiving his second yellow card.
There are two Second Round game outstanding in the Open Canada Cup, Caribbean Stars travel to London for a game with the City at Cove Road, an 8.38 p.m. kickoff on Monday, July 3 and it’s Serbian White Eagles vs. Toronto Lynx on July 14 at Centennial Stadium, a 7.30 start. The current Open Canada Cup holders, Windsor Border Stars have a bye through to the Third Round to be played early August.The semifinals and Open Canada Cup Final game will be played Labour Day weekend at the beginning of September.
