Attendance was about 60 on this cool night. My hands were cold by the second half. There was a game right before this...a game in the Caribbean League. One of the teams was the S-Squad which is the Selects development team. I'd seen their uniforms before--when the Caribbean Selects (supplemented with other CSL league players) played Harbourview United. All players have high numbers in the 70s or 80s with names like Scratchie, Screamas, Sickie, Sox etc. I was fooled thinking the Selects game had started already when I recognized goalie Ramon McIntosh, and Dwayne Osbourne (as "Seffrey"). Jason Garcia (or whoever is #8, Julius Caesar cut his dreads?) also played in the game.
The game was pretty even with Dynamites holding a slight edge in the first half but broke the game open with two quick goals after the restart. Dynamites could have had two more when CS goalie Ramon McIntosh was able to pick up two rebounds that had hit the goalpost and luckily bounced right to him. The Dynamites had brought enough players tonight to have substitutes at the right time. That is different than some of their road trips when I've seen them with only 12 or 13 players. Every win in the tightly bunched National division flips a team up in the standings. They play Brampton Stallions tomorrow.
This is the first time I've been to Birchmount Stadium in two years. The grass has now been replaced by field turf and even had the same "City Of Toronto" logo in the center circle and CFL football lines just like Esther Shiner Stadium in North York (home of the Astros) which was given the same treatment a few years ago. There's a new track surface installed. Biggest change is the east stand has been removed. The stand was in worse shape then I'd thought as I heard tonight that it had been condemmed. Since the dressing rooms had been under those stands, the players and refs now have to change in the hockey arena (not any different than at Victoria Park in Brampton (home of the Stallions). The scoreboard was just installed last week and has been promised to be operational by September 16th.
I asked Selects manager Neil Palmer the story behind their disasterous road trip to Montreal two weekends ago for back to back games against the Dynamites. The games ended as a 3-0 forfeit Saturday and then an 8-0 loss on Sunday. Palmer said the team brought 14 players for the weekend. They did arrive at the Saturday game 30 minutes before game time but Laval was awarded the forfeit as he felt they really didn't want to play. Refunding the ticket money wasn't a big inconvenience because the team doesn't draw many fans anyway he said. The played game had Palmer use only 11 players because he disiplined three of them while on the trip. The players started cramping up in the second half and the Dynamites pulled away. He wasn't surprised by the Thursday result with Serbian White Eagles losing to Toronto Croatia because he said his team the last weekend had held them to 2-0 in the first half but were pinned into their own end with the strong wind and rain. That game ended with the White Eagles winning 6-1.
