Playoff race tightens

St. Catharines Wolves completed its regular season home schedule with a decisive 4-1 victory over London City and Windsor Border Stars made a tight National Division race for playoff berths even tighter with a 4-1 win over Caribbean Selects, two games in the Canadian Soccer League Wednesday night.

Forward Carlo Arghittu struck quickly for St. Catharines at Club Roma, St. Catharines, when he beat London goalkeeper Craig Boytchuk immediately after the kickoff in what was timed at less than 60 seconds and remarkably Arghittu repeated the effort when he scored a second goal in the first minute of the second half. Gentjan Dervishi had earlier tied the game 1-1 for London at the 31st minute.

Tony Mermigas also scored twice for the Garden City team, finding the net at 76 minutes for a 3-1 score and 85 minutes to make it 4-1.

An altercation at the 61st minute resulted in Ian Sinclair of the home side being ejected together with midfielder Tshaka Anderson of London City.

St. Catharines have an improved 7-8-5 WLT for 26 points, while London City are in the cellar position of the National Division with a 3-10-6 record for 15 points.

Woreth Samson opened the scoring for Windsor Border Stars at the 8th minute mark at Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough for a 1-0 score at the interval. Gronthik Chatterjee made it 2-0 at 52 minutes, Erin Byrd struck to make the score 3-0 at 64 minutes before Mario Osborne scored for Caribbean Selects to cut the score to 3-1 at the 77th minute mark. Wil Klettzen added a fourth Border Stars goal at 86 minutes, a 4-1 final.

Windsor Border Stars also improve their position in a bid for a playoff berth and have a 7-6-5 record for 26 points, while Caribbean Selects are at 1-15-3 at the foot of the International Division with six points.
