Sunday - September 10, 2006
Oakville still on top

Oakville Blue Devils held on to top spot in the National Division with a 2-0 victory over Toronto Supra Portuguese, Laval Dynamites edged Brampton Stallions, 3-2, and North York Astros battled to a 2-2 tie with Italia Shooters, three games in the Canadian Soccer League Sunday.

Oakville had an edge over Toronto Supra Portuguese at Bronte Stadium in Oakville and the home side took the lead after 20 minutes when midfielder Andy Garcia drove the ball into the corner of the net from 8 yards. Gavin Russell made it 2-0 with a curling shot from close range at 79 minutes for a 2-0 final score. Supra Portuguese’ John Cardoso was red carded at 69 minutes for rough play.

The Blue Devils are on top of the National Division with a 8-5-6 WLT record for 30 points and Toronto Supra Portuguese stand in fourth place in the International Division with a 3-6-7 record for 16 points.

Laval Dynamites continued their winning way to keep in touch with league-leading Oakville with a 3-2 victory over Brampton Stallions at Victoria Park thanks to a successful penalty kick at the 85th minute mark by forward Ilias Calaitzidis. Calaitzidis opened the scoring after just three minutes, Rashid Madkour made it 2-0 for Laval at 65 minutes, but the Stallions bounced back from that deficit when Hugo Herrera scored at 75 minutes from the penalty spot and Andre de Andreas tied the game 2-2 at 80 minutes before Calaitzidis struck the winner.

Laval have an 8-7-5 record for 29 points, one point behind Oakville, while Brampton have a 7-7-3 record for 24 points.

Italia Shooters continue to pick-up points in the bid to secure third place in the International Division, a position that will guarantee them Vaughan-based side a playoff spot and they did so again Sunday with a 2-2 tie against North York Astros at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York. Rob Black opened the scoring for Italia at 32 minutes, Francisco Dos Santos put the Astros into a 2-1 lead with goals at 38 and 67 minutes and Franco Ruscetta scored the equalizer for Italia four minutes from time. Italia Shooters improve to 7-5-7 for 28 points, while North York Astros go winless since July 30 and have a 3-7-8 record for 17 points.
