RICHMOND, VA – (Wednesday, April 27, 2005) – The Richmond Kickers will host the Toronto Lynx this Saturday, April 30th at 7:00 p.m. at the University of Richmond Stadium. The Kickers will be collecting canned foods to benefit the Central Virginia Food Bank and the first 500 fans through the gate will receive a checkbook cover courtesy of First Market Bank.

Richmond will be Toronto’s third of six consecutive road games and their first stop of the weekend as they will travel to Virginia Beach on Sunday, May 1st. Toronto brings a 0-1-1 record to Richmond after back-to-back west coach matches last weekend under the guidance of new head coach Hubert Busby, Jr. Overall, the Kickers hold a record of 8-3-2 over the Lynx, including three wins in 2004.

“Toronto will provide a tough challenge for our team,” comments Richmond Kickers Head Coach Leigh Cowlishaw. “We are eager to return to winning ways and look forward to an exciting match this weekend.”

Off to a strong start this season, the Kickers enter Saturday’s match with a 2-1-0 record after last weekend’s back-to-back series versus in-state rivals Virginia Beach Mariners. Exchanging victories, Richmond defeated Virginia Beach at home on Friday before suffering their first loss of the season on Saturday on the road.

Players To Watch
Kickers: Three Kickers players were named to the USL First Division Team of the Week for the first week of the 2005 season. Goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale earned Team of the Week honors for his nine saves in wins over Atlanta and Virginia Beach and is currently ranked second in the league with 10 saves overall. Also named to the Team of the Week, defender Kevin Knight contributed with an assist during the Kickers season opener against Atlanta while forward Matthew Delicâte tallied three goals in wins over the Silverbacks and Mariners. Forward Kevin Jeffrey continues to be a scoring threat, recording one goal and two assists, good for second in the league in points (4) and tied for first in assists (2).

Lynx: The Lynx were also represented on the Team of the Week as former Kickers defender Rumba Munthali was nominated for the first time while with Toronto for his solid play in the scoreless draw at Vancouver last weekend. Toronto is looking to add strength to the midfield with the recent addition of Jamaican midfielder/forward Winston Griffiths who returns to the USL after a season spent with the Jamaican National Premier League Club, Arnett Gardens. Griffiths has earned 26 international caps with the Jamaican National Team and also has MLS experience with the Los Angeles Galaxy, New York/New Jersey Metrostars and New England Revolution (2002, 2003). Returning in 2005 is forward Ali Gerba who led the Lynx with 15 goals and four assists, finishing fourth in the league in 2004 in scoring and was named All-League.
