OTTAWA, ON -- The Ottawa Fury Women (5-1-0) defeated the Toronto Lady Lynx (7-1-0) by five goals to zero this evening at Carleton University’s Keith Harris Stadium. With bragging rights for Ontario and more importantly the Northern Division championship on the line, the Fury came out on top in this encounter of the Division’s leading two teams.

The Fury dominated the early proceedings against the Lynx but had little to show for their supremacy in possession for the first 35 minutes. Carmelina Moscato, Rhian Wilkinson and Annie Hamel were all prominent for the Fury but the Fury were unable to convert their advantage into goals.

Finally, in the 38th minute, Rhian Wilkinson shot home from 20 yards after Hamel had beaten Toronto keeper Anne Ogundele to a cross.

A fine flowing move by the Fury led to Moscato shooting over the bar from close range. On the stroke of halftime the Fury increased the lead when defender Linda Consolante bundled the ball over the line from a corner by Wilkinson.

Toronto came out strongly for the first ten minutes of the second half but eventually the Fury settled and began to play some of their best soccer of the season.

In the 55th minute, Leah Robinson finished a fine sequence of play involving Wilkinson and Moscato to put the Fury three goals to the good.

In the 75th minute, Wilkinson, who troubled the Lynx defence all evening with her pace and trickery, ran clear down the left side and unleashed a rising shot which Ogundele could only parry leaving Hamel to tap in the Fury’s fourth goal.

Veronique Maranda made her debut for the Fury in the 75th minute as the Fury looked to press home their advantage.

In the 83rd minute Kelly Parker weaved her way through the Lynx defence to set up the fifth and final goal for the Fury for Amy Vermuelen.

The Fury out shot the Lynx by 16 shots to 3. Taryn Swiatek earned the shut out for the Fury who were well marshaled in defence by Marie-Eve Nault. The Lynx and Fury will play their return league game in Toronto on Sunday, July 17th.

The Fury improve their record to 6-1-0 for 18 points, three points behind the 7-2-0 Lynx at the top of the Northern Division but with two games in hand. The Fury Women will be back in action at Keith Harris Stadium this Sunday against the Rochester Ravens Kick off 2 PM.

The Fury Men will be on the road playing the Reading Rage on Saturday and Ocean City in PDL action on Sunday. They return home to play the same two teams the following weekend. They entertain Reading on Saturday July 9th at 6PM and Ocean City on Sunday July 10th at 2 PM. All games are at Keith Harris Stadium at Carleton University
